"Beach Day" by Betsy Podlach captures the serene introspection of a day spent by the shore. In this 45" x 38" oil on linen, the fauvist influences are clear, as Podlach forgoes strict realism to emphasize the emotional resonance of the moment. The subject, adorned in black swimwear, is rendered with loose, flowing brushstrokes that suggest rather than define her form, set against a backdrop of warm yellow and cool blue hues that evoke the sand and sky. The painting’s subdued palette and the soft focus of the figure create a sense of nostalgic calm, reflective of a breezy, sunlit day by the sea. This work continues Podlach's exploration of human experience through expressionist techniques, inviting viewers into a contemplative space that is both personal and universal.
About the Artist:
Betsy Podlach is a figurative painter deeply rooted in tradition, yet her approach is refreshingly modern. Drawing on the principles of abstract expressionism, Podlach seeks to create space and light on the canvas using color, lines, and forms that evoke a magical synthesis of the physical and the spiritual. Her work reflects the influences of both Italian Venetian masters and American abstract expressionists, with the likes of Titian and Jackson Pollock being her most notable mentors. She has studied with key figures from the New York school of the 1950s and has also spent significant time painting in Italy and Paris. Podlach’s work is not just an expression of form but a deeper communication of human experience, aiming to convey emotions, force, and movement without the use of words. She embraces life's complexities and seeks to reflect them in her work, making her creations a vivid embodiment of her love for life and art.
Several of Betsy's paintings were printed on apparel at Marni's 2019 Milan Fashion Show.
THE NEW YORK TIMES:
"IN BETSY’S SENSUAL PORTRAITS, IS AN UNDERCURRENT OF LOVE.
In all the works, the soul of the narrative rests in the models’ eyes — often closed — and in their lips, painted in the embellishment of feminine beauty and emblematic of profound, not carnal, desire."
The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity and a letter of appraisal.

Betsy Podlach
Betsy Podlach was born in New York in 1964. She studied painting while earning her BA at Harvard University with William Reiman and Alfred Decredico, as well as literature and fiction writing with Carlos Fuentes and the playwright William Alfred. She then attended the New York Studio School in New York, NY. At the Studio School, she studied with members of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism who had studied with Hons Hoffman, Nicolas Carone, Mercedes Matter, and Ofra Shemish. Podlach paints landscapes, still-lifes, and figures. Her primary focus is on figurative images, nudes, couples, and portraits of women and sometimes men, with and without an imagined animal or several animals. These are created through a process of trying to create a person who didn’t exist before, who comes into existence for the first time as the painting develops in a dialogue with the emerging subjects. These women, men, animals, and imaginary settings are both intense in their imagined past and future and in their presence depicted as a moment in time, a moment in which time is stopped - vulnerable, sexual, strong, and engaged in the fullness of life, love, pain, and joy. Podlach has exhibited extensively in both the US and Europe. Her work is in both public and private collections all over the world, including that of Pfizer Inc, and NYU. She seeks to combine the elements of the great Venetian painter, Titan, and the expressionism of Jackson Pollock into a contemporary aesthetic of physicality, sexuality, intimacy, and mystery. She has studied, lived, and painted independently in Italy, Paris, and Provence thanks to grants, scholarships, and the generosity of Donatella Borghese and Nicolas Carone. She resided in New York City for many years and now lives and works on Eastern Long Island, near Southampton New York.
