About the Item
Sophie is an expressive and highly individualistic Post Impressionist work reminiscent of Chaim Soutine. Cottavoz isn known and celebrated for using incredibly thick paint that is as interesting to look at as his subjects. This has vivid and appealing reds and pinks. The frame is high quality custom frame with silver leafing on the front edge and a patinated cream color to the panel. Cotavoz’ portraits dazzle the viewer and reveal both the complexities of the figure and the finesse of a superb and accomplished abstraction. Sophie's jewel-like surface draws you in for closer inspection, leaving behind the portrait and heightening the abstract quality of the canvas. Very few artists have successfully employed such dynamic impasto techniques to as great an end, often applying paint thickly while abandoned narration.

André Cottavoz
Born in 1922 in Saint-Marcellin near the town of Grenoble in France, André Cottavoz was passionate about painting from an early age. Encouraged by his mother, an artist herself, Cottavoz entered the Fine Arts School in Lyon at the age of 18. Despite having been pressed into service during WWII, Cottavoz continued to paint and draw through the early 1940s. After the end of War he, along with Pierre Coquet a fellow student from Lyon, co-founded a group of painters who called themselves Noisme, or Sanzisme (without ism), also known as the Lyon School of New Figuration. Comprised of artists under the age of 30, their sole purpose was to paint “in the light” with no particular defining or restricting technique, rejecting all current artistic trends. In 1953 Cottavoz was awarded the Fénénon Prize by the University of Paris. Such a commendation served to boost his reputation. A close friendship of Japanese art dealer Kiyoshi Tamenaga, whom he met in 1957, opened doors to Japan for Cottavoz hosting exhibitions of his work at his gallery in Tokyo. He died in 2012.

View AllWoman, Yellow Shawl and Fan
Located in Greenwich, CT
An impressive and masterful depiction of a young woman with a fan. An American artist who studied and traveled in Europe and painted this painting before his return. It has its original frame which is magnificent. The frame has been regilded in th past 10 years. Vinton was abroad in the 1880s. The sitter gazes coyly over her fan in a gesture that ladies and gentleman of fin-de-siècle Europe would have understood to mean “wait for me,” and perhaps indicating her interest in a potential suitor. Vinton embarked on several trips to Europe—to Spain in 1882 with William Merritt Chase and Robert Blum, and to several different countries in 1888 following his marriage—which provided inspiration for a renewed style and subject matter. While in Spain with Chase and Blum, the three artists visited Madrid and Toledo; there, Vinton studied the masterfully tenebrous portraits of Velázquez, an influence that can be seen in Portrait with Yellow Shawl...
