About the Item
Amanda Joy Brown is a visual artist and educator based in Nashville, TN. Brown earned her MFA in the painting program at the Savannah College of Art and Design. During her time there she studied at the Lacoste Residency in Provence, France, after which she completed a month-long residency at the Vermont Studio Center. After moving to Nashville, Brown was part of the Ground Floor Gallery+Studios collective for several years, occasionally teaching while working in her studio. Her work is exhibited and collected internationally.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Emerging from an interest in the overlapping mechanisms drawing and painting, the Crowd Series centers around interconnecting webs and calligraphic, dripped line work. These marks both create and distort recognizable form, exploring the space between chaos and composure. Collective and individual identity are both defined and dissolved in these pieces, embodying the energy and organism-like nature of interconnected individuals sharing a place and time.

Amanda Brown
Amanda Joy Brown works out of her studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Back in the day, after reluctantly taking a required painting course at Harding University while studying Graphic Design, she found she wanted to stick with it and continued to earn an MFA in the painting program at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Brown’s work has been exhibited both in the US and internationally and is a part of many collections around the world.

In the evocative stillness of "Whispers of Ancestry," the latest painting in my "Thoughts" series, I present a young woman seated, her knees drawn up to her chest in a gesture of contemplation and self-protection. Her bare form speaks not just of vulnerability but of the raw canvas of humanity, unshielded and sincere.
This image captures a moment of introspection, where the silence around her is rich with the echoes of ancestral wisdom. The apple trees, heavy with crimson fruit, bend towards her as if to share the stories and lessons imbued by generations past. Their red apples are like whispers of knowledge, symbols of the life force passed down through time, offering both sustenance and reflection.
The woman's dreamy gaze suggests she is not just recalling her own experiences but also accessing the collective memory and spirit of her lineage. In this piece, the apple trees serve as a bridge between the present and the whispers of history, reminding us that we are forever rooted in the stories of those who came before us.
