About the Item

A young harlequin looking towards the right of the frame wearing an orange/reddish costume. The harlequin sits in a chair in front of a red backdrop. Framed Size: 35 1/4 x 29 1/4 Inches Charles Levier was born in 1920 to a French father and American mother in Corsica. From an early age, he held a fascination with color and form which led him to private studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Decoratifs at the age of 17. During World War II, Levier served in the French Army in North Africa and later became Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. After the war, Levier divided his time between the United States and France. His first one-man show opened at the Galerie Constantine in Lyons in 1949 followed by an American debut in Los Angeles in 1950. Levier continued with gallery shows on both sides of the Atlantic throughout his career. Levier's works may be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Menton Museum in Paris, the Atlanta Museum, Seattle Museum, Evansville Museum, New Orleans Museum and San Diego Museum. His works have also been included in the prominent collections of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Prince and Princess Poniatoski, Mrs. Dan Topping, Dean Martin and others. Levier is most known for his abstracted Post-Impressionistic still lifes, cityscapes of harbor towns, and studies of the female figure and les saltimbanques, or acrobats. He often employed a Cubist technique, which was developed in France around 1910 by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) and Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963). Ultimately, Levier was one of several artists who continued to paint in the Cubist manner well into the 20th century. In Banjo sur la Table avec un Pichet et une Pomme Verte, Levier has once again returned to a favored subject - a subtle still life and pleasing hues. A mandolin, inscribed as a "Banjo" on the reverse of the oil in the artist’s hand, is the principle object found in the overall composition. Painting a decorative scrolled motif in the round, Levier has added an extra dimension to the musical instrument while a small bird, perhaps of symbol of the artist himself, perches on the top rim of the mandolin. To the right sits a clay pitcher with handle in neutral shades of cream and taupe. A green apple completes the scene, carefully laid on a linen cloth, atop a French country wooden table. French Modernist Charles Levier died in 2003.
