"Ethel, the Blue Spotted Cow" 1960s Folk Art Oil Painting, Cowboys Birds Cattle
Located in Denver, CO
'Ethel, The Blue Spotted Cow' is an oil on board vibrant folk art painting by Marin Saldana with colorful cattle, birds, and cowboys with a blue sky with clouds and airplanes. Presented in a custom frame with all archival materials, outer dimensions measure 40 ¼ x 50 ¼ inches. Image measures 29 x 39 inches. About the Artist: Born on December 11, 1874, at Rancho Nuevo, 40 miles north of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Martin Saldaña’s life began humbly on a family ranch established by his grandfather. His father, a cattle dealer, raised nine children, and though Martin was the smallest in the family, he overcame the odds to live a remarkable life. From a young age, he worked on the ranch, caring for pigs at age 8 and joining his brothers on horseback at age 10 to help herd cattle. He had a fondness for gardening, managing a large flower garden on the ranch by the time he was 15. Resourceful and driven, Martin sold wood to fund his trip to San Antonio, where he found better-paying work picking cotton. After saving $350, Saldaña traveled to Tampico, Mexico, where he worked as a stoker on a ship, enduring the physically grueling job of shoveling coal while standing in water all day. Using his earnings, he and a few companions pooled their money to purchase mules, enabling them to peddle dishes to women in the mountainous regions near the mining town of Pacuoco. His time there was marked by danger, as mountain lions roamed the area—he recalled seeing the bodies of four men who had fallen victim to the wild cats. To avoid a similar fate, Martin and his companions built large fires at night for protection. Saldaña's adventurous spirit led him to work as a cook on a fishing boat, where he narrowly escaped drowning after falling between the boat and the pier. His cooking career took him across the United States, from Alabama to Kentucky and Tennessee, where he worked in various restaurants, including Italian and Greek establishments. In Tennessee, he was captivated by the sight of waitresses in white silk dresses—a memory that would later influence his art. In 1912, Saldaña arrived in Denver, Colorado, where he found work as a cook at the Sisters of Mercy Hospital. In 1915, he began a long career as a cook at the Brown Palace Hotel, a Denver landmark, where he worked for decades. By 1950, at the age of 76, Saldaña had saved enough to afford his own room nearby. It was then, in an unexpected twist, that he was invited to join a children's watercolor class at the Denver Art Museum. Embraced by both the children and their teacher, Saldaña discovered a passion for painting. Encouraged by this new creative outlet, he enrolled in art classes at the Emily Griffith School of Opportunity, where he studied under Lester Bridaham. Bridaham became Saldaña’s mentor, patron, and biggest advocate, buying every painting the artist created. He helped promote Saldaña's work in galleries and museums around the world. In 1953, Life magazine published an article titled “An Old Cook’s New Art,” celebrating Saldaña’s unexpected artistic journey. Saldaña only painted for the last 15 years of his life, working primarily from memory and imagination. His paintings, often depicting scenes from his childhood in San Luis Potosí, showcased ranch life, vibrant landscapes, animals, and his beloved flower garden. His bold use of color and geometric forms echoed the tapestry traditions of his Mexican heritage. Despite a relatively brief painting career, Saldaña completed a new work every three days and left behind a significant body of work. Saldaña passed away on September 5, 1965, at the age of 91. His legacy endures through his distinctive and heartfelt paintings, which are held in major collections including the Denver Art Museum, the University of Wyoming Art Museum, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the International Folk Art Museum, Neuss in Aberthaw Museum (London), and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). ©David Cook Galleries...

Folk Art Naive Oil Painting Ljubomir Milinkov Whimsical Pastoral Farm Landscape
By Ljubomir Milinkov
Located in Surfside, FL
Ljubomir Milinkov (1938) Oil painting on board, Whimsical pastoral farm landscape Hand signed upper right, Dimensions: painting 12-1/2 x 15-1/2 inches. framed 18.5 x 21.5 inches Ljubomir Milinkov depicts a fantasy like setting using bold colors, and carefully planned out brushstrokes. The figures and inanimate objects that fill the composition are out of proportion, bi-dimensional, and primitive, cartoonist in terms of style. In fact this painting is iconic of Milinkov's Naif style. His work was sold by Wally Findlay Galleries in New York and Palm Beach and he has designed silk scarves for Hermes. Born in Sovac, Serbia, Arrived in France in 1962. Milinkov enters the world of art. He begins to distill his own style. Good life and beautiful models on the Place du Tertre in Montmartre fill and inspire him. In 1967 he went on an adventure to the USA. For 6 months in 1968 he crossed America from New York to San Francisco aboard his own Cadillac hearse, bought for this trip. It's the full hippie period, he shaves his head in contrast to all the bearded people around him. Back in New York in 1969, he exhibited at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair with 60 artists, five hundred thousand visitors. Sponsored by the organizers to register for 2 years at the New York School of Fine Arts, he declines this generous offer to preserve his freedom and explore his own fauvist mode of expression. Proud to be a graduate of the Fine Arts Schools of “Nulle part” and “Every where”. In 1972 he opened his first solo exhibition at the Masseur Museum of Art, Monroe, Louisiana. In 1973 he joined the Wally Findlay International Gallery, with which he worked exclusively for 16 years, exhibiting in New York, Chicago, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, Paris. He was included in the show "One of a Kind" along with Artists: Camille Bombois, Orville Bulman, Henri Maik, Gustavo Novoa and Annette Ollivary. His tapestry “Noah's Ark” was purchased by the royal family of Saudi Arabia. In 1974 he returned to France and settled between Cannes and Paris. His collaboration with French design house legend Hermes began in 1982: creation of the first Carré “Jardin Enchanté”, followed in 1998 by Gavroches scarves “La Cavale Joyeuse” and “Les Ailes pleines de Joie” and in 2013 the Carré “Bateau Flowery”. It is the “Enchanted Garden” which will have had the honor in 1983 of being the emblem of Hermès' participation in the 150th anniversary of Central Park in New York, where he will be the guest of honor. Also in 1982, creation of his second Aubusson tapestry "Arche de Noé n ° 2". In 2000 his famous “Twin towers” paintings...

Beach Bunnies, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
During her stay in South Florida, artist Jessica JH Roller visited the beach daily and painted on the calmer mornings. She created this piece during the trip, capturing the short-eared bunnies that emerged from the dunes each day, alongside the emerald and turquoise waters of the Atlantic coast. The folk art style, with its bold colors and black outlines, gives the piece a vibrant and playful quality.

About the Artist
Artist Jessica JH Roller paints whimsical and playful compositions of animals and people, marked by bold colors and primitivist linework. She distills a scene into a few simple shapes, using color to create contrast and vibrancy, often choosing palettes that reflect pop culture. "My adopted kittens, Tony and Larry, opened my eyes and unleashed the artist inside me," shares Jessica. "After, I started to notice birds, trees, color, everything." Jessica brings to life her dynamic creations in the comfort of her studio in her century-old home. She enjoys listening to music and audiobooks while painting with her 18-year-old acrylic-covered easel. When not painting, Jessica cherishes time with her family and five cats, teaches yoga, and enjoys cycling along the river.

Naomi Jones's richly patterned realistic paintings focus on the preservation of vulnerable wildlife. Jones finds catharsis in painting soulful animals. Portraits of vulnerable species native to the North American landscape are painted with an illustrative sensitivity, reminding the viewer to appreciate the delicate balance of nature. Jones tries to make such wildlife, frequently living on the edges of homes and gardens, visible through paintings set among vividly patterned backgrounds. This original 36-inch square acrylic painting of a rabbit is wired and ready to hang. The sides of this artwork are painted and it does not require framing. It is signed by the artist on the front. Dog Ball Bird, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Jaime Ellsworth captures a clever brown dog skillfully balancing a red ball and a black bird on its head. With curious gazes, the critters turn to their right as if something has piqued their interest. The two-tone backdrop of ochre and moss green sets the stage for this endearing scene.

About the Artist
Jaime Ellsworth paints animals. Her career as a cowhand never got off the ground, so she stumbled into art never knowing it would complement her passion for animals so completely. Most subjects are her own, but lately she has expanded out of her corral to include bears and beasts not commonly seen on San Juan Island, in the Pacific Northwest, where she's lived for the last 30 years. She suspects it will be years before she runs out of inspiration or has jeans that aren’t covered with paw prints or paint.
