Roman school, circa 1740. Countryside Interlude with Horses near Rome.

About the Item

Countryside Interlude with Horses (Sosta in campagna) PAOLO MONALDI (post 1710 - post 1779), entourage ante 1750 Oil on canvas Measurements: Unframed: 45 x 31 cm. Framed: 61 x 48 cm. This painting depicts a typical moment of life in the countryside of Lazio before the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy in 1870: a gentleman's stop assisted by his servant. The bright tones of the sky and the technical style allow dating the work to the first half of the eighteenth century and placing its creation in Rome. Attributing this painting to Paolo Monaldi (post 1710 - post 1779) is a plausible hypothesis, given its similarity to his other works. Monaldi was a Roman painter, possibly the author of this canvas, but certainly belonging to the Bamboccianti movement. The Bamboccianti depicted scenes of everyday life with realism and detail, often with a humorous or grotesque touch. The Nordic painters, such as Pieter van Laer (known as "Il Bamboccio," born in Haarlem, Netherlands, 1599 - died in Rome, Italy, 1642), were fundamental in the creation of this movement, bringing with them the influence of Dutch genre painting. Monaldi drew inspiration from the works of Michelangelo Cerquozzi, but with a more delicate and pleasant touch. The composition of this painting derives from Cerquozzi's works, as seen in the resemblance to the "Sosta presso l'abbeveratoio" in the Galleria Corsini. The interpretation attributed to Monaldi, however, is more refined and less crude. His "heroes of everyday life" are presented with a special nobility, demonstrating how Monaldi was capable of carefully considering every aspect of his paintings, hiding additional meanings behind his winning formula. This painting is in excellent condition, testament to its excellent pictorial quality and technical skill that has favored its preservation in such an impeccable state. The frame is in 18th-century style, carved and gilded wood, but from the 20th century.

Mother dog and her puppies, 19th Century French Barbizonf armhouse painting
Located in Norwich, GB
An charming 19th century dog painting depicting a mother dogue and her exuberant topsy turvy pups by the farmhouse barns or cowsheds , with a young child given them a fuss! Dating from ca 1860-70, the oil on canvas is unsigned, but bears on the verso a rather special stamp from colour and artists supplies merchant Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922). Paul Durand-Ruel is known as the legendary art dealer who launched, almost single handedly, the Impressionist movement. He represented Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir in his Paris, London and New York Galleries. Like his father Jean Marie Durand, Durand Ruel had started as both a merchant of art supplies, and dealer. Often, these two activities overlapped, as he would supply cash strapped artists who left paintings as security. Paul Durand Ruel was one of the first to discover Barbizon artist...
