ABOUT Born in 1967, Piussi was raised in Florence where he studied at the Istituto d’arte, majoring in sculpture and painting and completing his artistic education at Milano’s Brera Art Academy. He lives in Florence, pursuing painting, bas-reliefs in terracotta and in bronze, and bronze sculpture. Piussi presents an ideal, almost childlike world which can be found below everyday events, a step outside the flow of time, yet still a part of contemporary life, with a nod to Alex Katz and David Hockney. The drama, or lack thereof, is played out in simplified, almost abstract spaces. Pure in intent, Piussi’s oeuvre are inspired by the Early Renaissance. Snapshot images of a world reduced to its essence, the apparently comic-book style has echoes of Giotto, Paolo Uccello, of medieval illuminations. Rather than mimicking the appearance of nature, Piussi reaches for its essence, without distracting details. In Shivers, a disease is spread through the throat, resulting in a zombie-like infection. In this painting, coupled with an image from The Eyes of Laura Mars, is a reference to ideological possession and the use of compelled speech. It is a concern towards those who display totalitarian traits in their quest for justice, too caught up in their own righteousness to really consider the damage they are doing. The do in the background stands above the lifeless body of a woman, it is dogma and its dismantlement of womanhood. I embrace the power of cinema and its ability to alter perception, as it is media that is a reflection of our primordial desires. I’m fascinated by concepts involving the limits of human perception, the ambiguity of morality in relation to nature, the paradoxical nature of reality, and the human struggle to reckon with uncertainty. Humans bear the burden of being as we are, all caught in a flux of unbelievable cognitive abilities and animalistic instincts. Every painting is in its own universe and I cater to it. Nothing is precious. Chaos is embraced.
