Camille Hilaire was born in Metz in 1916. From a modest background, he first became a house painter, then began drawing and painting on the spot.
Unwilling to be drafted by the German army as an Alsatian-Lorrainer, he went underground and enrolled under an assumed name, Leblanc, at the Beaux-Arts in Paris during the Occupation. It was during this period that he befriended André Lhote.
In 1947, Hilaire was appointed professor of drawing and decorative composition at the École nationale supérieure d'art de Nancy, a position he held until 1958. He competed for the Prix de Rome in 1950, winning 2nd runner-up prize. From 1950 to 1951, he was a resident at Casa de Velázquez in Madrid.
Alternating between post-cubism and figuration, his brightly colored works are luminous. Camille Hilaire represented the nuanced expression of composition. Starting with effective structures, he harnessed the power of color and achieved an admirable and constant sense of calm, breadth and grandeur in translating motifs and elements, which never prevented him from expressing a burning passion for creating and sharing.
As for landscapes, Hilaire knew how to dictate their structure without apparent constraint, adding the fresh, piquant green that so often characterized him. In this way, nature and the elements became a pretext for the artist to push color to achieve the desired effect.
He died at his estate in Fourges, Eure (Normandy), and was buried in the Cimetière de l'Est (Metz) in 2004.

Camille Hilaire
Camille HILAIRE (1916-2004) was a French painter and weaver from Metz in Eastern France. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was also tutored by André Lhote. Camille Hilaire is subtle in his composition. He did away with efficient structures, he held power with colour and achieved a wonderful, consistent sense of calm, amplitude and greatness by translating patterns and elements, which never prevented him from expressing a burning passion for creating and sharing. His nudes were remarkable, with perfect curves, coiled with charm and set in a context in which their sensual fullness imposed itself with provocative grace. As for his landscapes, Camille Hilaire could determine the structure without apparent constraints, overlaying a fresh, spicy green that is so characteristic of them. Thus, nature and elements they become the pretext upon which the artist "pushed" the colour to get the effect felt. Over time, a dozen monographs have been devoted to him as well as documentaries and films. He leaves behind a large body of work who strongly influenced the French painters of the mid-twentieth century.

Woman, Dog & Spring Flowers Figurative Abstract Painting with Petroglyphs
By Cindy Kane
Located in Soquel, CA
Robert Azensky Fine Art is proud to offer this vintage figurative abstract of a Woman, Dog & Spring Flowers with Petroglyphs by Martha’s Vineyard artist Cindy Kane
Absolutely stunning vintage large scale abstract expressionist painting titled "Bending Forward," by San Francisco and now Martha's Vineyard artist Cindy Kane (American, b. 1957). This unique monumental piece, created in 1987, has a netherworld primal quality depicting a petroglyph-like blonde woman and her animal spirit dog bending toward a flower-strewn earth. Additional petroglyph vignettes add mystery to narrative.
Signed and dated "Kane '87" upper right.
Unframed.
Image size: 66.5"H x 84"W.
Her early works were influenced by her memories of these hieroglyphs, and embellished with symbols from her dreams. “I hope [that viewers] get what I get from my work, which is enjoyment, visual satisfaction, and a story — whatever their own story is,” she said. “I can’t give them one, but I can tell my own, and the story they take with them is something personal.”
Her early work was influenced by the experience of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park, where she had the opportunity to document Anasazi Indian pictographs in pen and ink drawings. These images would inform her work for years to come. While working in Grand Canyon National Park, she became familiar with the Anasazi Indian ruins...
