Provenance: private collection - Los Angeles, CA. Artist's copyright stamp and registration number lower left on verso, (painting No. 1386). Last photo: Adolf Sehring's portrait of Pope John being formally presented in the Grotto at the Vatican in 1979. Adolf Sehring is the only American artist to be commissioned to paint the Papal picture of Pope John Paul II, (Houston page 39).
"So in early August, 1988, he and his son, Marc embarked on a two-week South Africa Safari. Marc had outgrown his position as his father's favorite boy model and was a husky 18-year-old. The two took over 2,500 photographs during their trip and Adolf made hundreds of sketches of details of the action and expression of the animals, as well as of the backgrounds. August, the South African mid-winter, is regarded as the ideal time for such adventure, it being the dry season and the fast-growing grasses in the bush are trampled down. This enables one to see the animals more clearly that at any other time of the year. They chose the Kruger National Park Area, considered one of the largest as well as best staffed and managed in Africa. It contains the largest gatherings of giraffes in the world, as well as, the one offering the greatest variety of other wildlife." - 'The Real World of Adolf Sehring', Houston page 205-206
Biography:
Adolf Sehring (1930-2015) was a Russian/German-American realist painter. Best known for his landscape, figurative, and still-life paintings, Sehring's career was characterized by change and upheaval. Born in Russia on June 8, 1930, he moved from attending art school in Berlin after World War II to Philadelphia in 1949, and subsequently enlisted in US military service during the Korean War. During this time, he taught himself to paint, gaining recognition by portraying popular actresses Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell during his military stint, and returned to the US in the early 1950s to pursue advertising and illustrating. Sehring continued to paint until death in Punta Gorda, FL on March 4, 2015, garnering regional acclaim and prominent commissions like a papal portrait of Pope John Paul II in 1979, and a bronze sculpture of Pocahontas in 1994. His works are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Grand Palais in Paris, U.S. Embassy to Sweden, Chrysler Museum, Mellons, Temple University, Museum of St. Mary's, Bayly Museum of Virginia, the U.S. State Department and the Vatican, among many other private and public collections.
