Susan English
Leave the Path, Olive Green, Sage, Jade, Aqua Blue Green Tinted Polymer Painting

2023

About the Item

The surface of Leave the Path by Susan English is a wonderful play of color, light, and composition. Hues of olive, soft jade, pale sage green, light mint green, and pale bluish green meet and merge in softly transitioning planes. The poured layers of English's tinted polymer on aluminum create the depth and surface textures throughout the painting, which is composed of multiple panels. Signed and titled on verso. Susan English’s paintings are rich in their sophisticated vocabulary of color and surface. By expertly pouring layers of tinted polymer paints English has arrived at a body of work whose minimalist appearance belies their complexities. Through a series of planned pours and the manipulation of smooth aluminum panels English both directs and anticipates how the paint will accumulate, disperse, resist, and form its own small abstractions. English makes her paintings through process, intention, experience, and chance. The thickness and viscosity of the paint dictates the subtleties in appearance and the intensity of each color. Her painting’s surfaces range from matte to medium or high gloss, each variously absorbing or reflecting light. The panels are assembled into specifically calibrated horizontal or vertical sequences existing always in relationship to the light in the room and the position of the viewer.  Susan English's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions throughout the United Sates. English received a fellowship at the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Ithaca, NY and was Artist-in-Residence at Habitat for Artists, Garrison, NY. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Chronogram, Abstract Art Online and the Philadelphia Inquirer, to name a few. English earned an MFA from Hunter College, New York, NY and BA from Hamilton College, Clinton, NY. She lives and works in Cold Spring, NY.

"Eruption" - Large Scale Color Field Abstract
By Kristina Quinones
Located in Soquel, CA
Wonderful large scale abstract painting on canvas on wood panel titled "Eruption", painting is wrapped around the edges. Has a hard high gloss finish. Signed on verso "Kristina Quinones '06." Image, 60"L x 48"H x 2.75"D. "My work challenges the boundary between control and uncertainty. The grounding I feel through my work is an expression of the space that exists between these two phenomena. I mix my color and pour my paint, unsure of the outcome. I pick up the panel and start to dance with the movement of the paint as it slides from one side to the next. As the layers of color accumulate on each painting, the opportunity to manipulate the space between control and uncertainty diminishes. A sense of urgency arises, which is expressed in the textured movement of color. Paradoxically, as the process unfolds, my desire to control dissipates, and I am left with the ambiguous feeling of uncertainty. This cycle is repeated endlessly, incessantly, as if my will alone could leave its imprint. Whereas in the past this ambiguity would disturb me, I now find the process reassuring. It is clear that, despite my best intentions, each piece will choose its own path." Kristina Quinones was born and raised in Connecticut. Received her bachelor's degree in Printmaking from the University of Connecticut in 2001 then moved to California. In 2005 she received her Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. Quinones has exhibited in group shows throughout the United States. Recently Quinones was awarded the Affiliate Program...

"Iced Champagne Poppy" Contemporary Mixed Media Floral Painting on Canvas
By Antoinette Ferwerda
Located in New York, NY
This painting by Antoinette is a stylish and luxurious mixed media on canvas piece depicting abstract floral shapes with bold use of color and contrast. The Silver Leaf background allows for the luminosity to shine through effortlessly, as the lines and intricate details of the silk paper laid over paint and mixed media add a most interesting texture. The artist's hand embellishes with free fall paint dripping to add elegant accents. This painting comes housed in a black oak floater frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 31.5 x 31.5 inches Frame measures 33 x 33 inches Antoinette Ferwerda is a renowned Australian artist largely recognized for producing a bold collection of fine artwork that joyfully explores the geometry of shape and the changing light from dusk to dawn. Championing her love for shape, reflection, and nature using a diverse pallet of mixed media to portray her abstract interpretations of nature. Antoinette's diverse past and a childhood that was somewhat nomadic has inspired much of her work today. Antoinette’s backstory reads like something out of an adventure series, having spent her early days living in remote pockets of Papua New Guinea, where she was lucky to spend time in a seaside shack on Ela Beach in Port Moresby, as well as the volcanic town of Rabaul, the Cargo Port Lae, before moving on to Darwin where her Dad worked for the Red Cross and helped with the re-build process after Cyclone Tracy. This was followed by a family stint in Europe, visiting Netherlands, London, Belgium, France, Italy, and Switzerland, before finally settling back in Melbourne for her formative years. Her love for nature and exploring the patterns and relationships she finds within started early. “I’ve been forever fascinated with color and the magical interplay of light”. “Blessed to have a teacher Mum who fostered regular creative time during our nomadic stint, my childhood was largely spent creating, especially outdoors”. Never without a pen, sketchbook or scraps of paper, her natural ability to create in layers instinctively started in these early years. Although her work continues to evolve, she consistently creates works that are rich in layers, resulting in pieces that are optimistic, luminous and full of stories from her colorful life. Her signature work is abundant with color and texture, resulting in a transparent quality of her works. Adaptable to any palette, Antoinette has produced works from a diversity of spectrums and mediums – sun-soaked, muted and ethereal, vibrant, as well as monochromatic with accents of gold. Her themes include abstract and metaphysical interpretations of fossicking in rock pools, exploring the rolling hills of the countryside both here and abroad, the rock formations of the Australian outback and the magical light of a European summer to name just a few. Her dream and longing to become an artist became a reality after starting her own family and farewelling a corporate life in the pharmaceutical industry, with her debut solo exhibition in 2014. Six years on, Antoinette has fast become a firm favorite amongst interior designers, stylists and home decorators alike, having been represented by fenton&fenton, Thom Gallery and Trit House (formally Click On Furniture) to name just a few. Continually experimenting and evolving as an artist, Antoinette invites the viewer to look deeper through surface layers to find hidden stories of color and form. Past collections have been inspired by visits to the bustling markets of India, the morning light outside her childhood beach shack...
