About the Item
Over the past few years Steven Baris Has been fascinated by the rapid proliferation of fulfillment and distribution centers, sprouting like mushrooms throughout metropolitan regions. Easy to spot; these signature postindustrial landmarks are overwhelmingly bland and massive, as they totally transform if not obliterate the previously green countryside. Baris Has surveyed them from on high (using Google Earth) and taken occasional overland “expeditions,” photographing and videotaping these quintessential placeless places.
Much of Baris’ artwork over the past decade has been directly or indirectly influenced by the implicit geometries and unique spatial configurations of these architectural settings. More recently Baris Has been intrigued not only by the distribution of these “chunks” in space, but how they are perceived in time—initially from filming them in sequence from a moving car, and subsequently through numerous “timeline” screen grabs from his video editing interface. these animated sequences became the subject of his paintings, now untethered to any constraints of photographic representation.
Steven Baris was born in Aberdeen Washington and grew up on various American Indian reservations in Northern California, Montana, and Washington State.
He received a B.A. from The Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington and a MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
He lives and teaches art in the Philadelphia area.
He has exhibited widely throughout North America and Europe;
Steven Baris’ work is represented in Philadelphia by the Pentimenti gallery, in Denver by the Space Gallery, and in New York by both ODETTA and Kathryn Markel Fine Art Galleries.

Steven Baris
