'Blood in the Veins'. Cherry blossom pink white blue magenta abstract sakura

About the Item

'Blood in the Veins' Original Artwork, Unframed. _____________________ Capturing the flush of fleeting youth, the cherry blossoms blush crimson as the sap pulses through branches, buds, blossoms; like blood through the veins of spring. From a body of work titled 'Elemental', in which Sophia employs her unique method of working using the four elements of nature- earth, air, fire and water. The physical process of creating this painting embodies the tangible moment when the elemental forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: spring sunlight dancing through dappled petals cast a delicate shadow, and like the morning sun in a spider's web, it became a physical presence. "I am rather like Mrs Darling, finding Peter Pan's shadow '...Quite the ordinary kind...' I roll it up and put it away carefully in a drawer". The painting is scratched and scarred, by tactile movements of the breeze, the tumbling stream water: memories intrinsically embedded. A narrative portrait of a moment. The work is characterised by this practice of plein air working, including various marks, dents, or cockling from long periods of being submerged and washed. Mixed media painting on board, with deep blue tones of cyanotype solution used as a painting medium, together with vibrant, richly layered colours of acrylic ink and accents of gold leaf. Signed in pencil to the lower right corner; Haiku inscribed in pencil to lower centre 71.5 x 18 cm / 28.1 x 7 inches * Please note that images of the artwork in situ and framed are an indication of how the piece can look and in the context of other companion pieces. The artwork is being sold unframed. Framing options are available, please contact. Sophia's works have an affinity with the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi sabi, and with resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, she illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Penwith Society of Arts' St Ives;'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago. ___________________________ Contemporary . His education as an artist began in 1963 at Fullerton Community College where his interest in architectural drafting led him to develop a passion for drawing, painting, and printmaking. In 1966, he pursued his love for printmaking further at California State University, Long Beach under the former Tamarind Lithography Workshop printer, Robert Evermon. In 1969, Petersen went on to work as an assistant printer at Gemini G.E.L. where he printed editions for Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. Most notably, Petersen served as one of the head printers for Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon series, during which the two formed a close friendship. In late 1970, Rauschenberg invited Petersen to live and work with him on Captiva Island, Florida, which had recently become the artist's permanent residence and studio. In 1971, Rauschenberg and Petersen established the experimental print shop, Untitled Press, Inc., where they not only printed their own work but also for visiting artists including David Bradshaw, Brice Marden, Hisachika Takahashi, Cy Twombly, and Robert Whitman. Petersen lived and worked closely with Rauschenberg on Captiva Island until 1980. During the early 1970's Petersen predominately created monochromatic minimalist work and then began to explore the possibilities presented by his intricate sketch pages. In 1976, Petersen made his first monthly inspired journal drawing from the highlights of his sketchbook where he collected observations of daily surroundings, drawings for future work, musings, postcards, photographs, and ephemera such as calendar clippings and magazine illustrations. This technique continues to serve as the basis for his present work. In 1973, Petersen had his first solo show at Galerie Sonnabend in Paris, France, which was followed by numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. His work is represented in private and public collections internationally including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee National d'Art Moderne in Paris, France; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Francois Pinault, Venice, Italy; Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, New York, NY; James Rosenquist, Aripeka, FL; Ileana & Michael Sonnabend, New York, NY; Cy Twombly Foundation, Rome, Italy, and Universal Limited Art Editions, NY. Petersen currently works in Tivoli, NY where he lives with his wife, Cinda Sparling...
