SONIA GECHTOFF BIOGRAPHY
Sonia Gechtoff was an American artist known for her Abstract Expressionist paintings. Wielding a palette knife, Gechtoff produced energetic works with vortex-like marks of nuanced color. “I wasn’t the least bit interested in feminist art, and I still am not,” she once said. “We were feminist before the feminists came along.” Born on September 25, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA, she was taught to paint from a young age by her father the artist Leonid Gechtoff. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and moved to San Francisco in 1951. In California, she fell into the milieu of Bay Area artists such as Elmer Bischoff, Jay DeFeo, and her future husband James Kelly. The artist cited the work of Clyfford Still as a major influence, especially during her shift from expressive figuration to abstraction. Gechtoff and her husband moved to New York in 1958, and quickly became fixtures of the city’s art scene. Over the course of her career, Gechtoff’s work fell out of fashion but continued to evolve, incorporating motifs from her everyday surroundings and abstracting them in unique ways. The artist died on February 1, 2018 in New York, NY at the age of 91. Today, her works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Robert Petersen was born in 1945 in the small farm town of Le Mars, Iowa and was raised there until 1952 when he moved with his family to Whittier, California. His education as an artist began in 1963 at Fullerton Community College where his interest in architectural drafting led him to develop a passion for drawing, painting, and printmaking. In 1966, he pursued his love for printmaking further at California State University, Long Beach under the former Tamarind Lithography Workshop printer, Robert Evermon.
In 1969, Petersen went on to work as an assistant printer at Gemini G.E.L. where he printed editions for Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. Most notably, Petersen served as one of the head printers for Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon series, during which the two formed a close friendship. In late 1970, Rauschenberg invited Petersen to live and work with him on Captiva Island, Florida, which had recently become the artist's permanent residence and studio. In 1971, Rauschenberg and Petersen...

In late 1970, Rauschenberg invited Petersen to live and work with him on Captiva Island, Florida, which had recently become the artist's permanent residence and studio. In 1971, Rauschenberg and Petersen established the experimental print shop, Untitled Press, Inc., where they not only printed their own work but also for visiting artists including David Bradshaw, Brice Marden, Hisachika Takahashi, Cy Twombly, and Robert Whitman.
Petersen lived and worked closely with Rauschenberg on Captiva Island until 1980. During the early 1970's Petersen predominately created monochromatic minimalist work and then began to explore the possibilities presented by his intricate sketch pages. In 1976, Petersen made his first monthly inspired journal drawing from the highlights of his sketchbook where he collected observations of daily surroundings, drawings for future work, musings, postcards, photographs, and ephemera such as calendar clippings and magazine illustrations. This technique continues to serve as the basis for his present work.
In 1973, Petersen had his first solo show at Galerie Sonnabend in Paris, France, which was followed by numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Petersen currently works in Tivoli, NY where he lives with his wife, Cinda Sparling...

Acrylic and Graphite on Paper

Floated and framed in a museum quality frame with UV plexiglass
This is a unique painting
"Pressure " [on God], Robert Longo's unique acrylic and graphite work on paper, was created during the same period as his iconic work, simply labeled "Pressure", now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in N.Y. Whereas the latter depicts a young man, the present work, titled "Pressure on Heaven", then deliberately changed to "Pressure on God", is more ethereal in subject matter, though the lone youth's image is still present in the composition.
From Lexander magazine:
"In the excerpt from Neal Benezra’s article about 1980s art in the previous post, he writes, “Robert Longo’s Pressure might well be the most representative work of art of the 1980s.” I would go further and state that it is the definitive work of the 1980s—the penultimate visual anthem of the era—and most especially the period between 1979—1987, during which the musical genres of gothic rock and deathrock flourished and achieved their greatest artistic successes through the work of a variety of diverse bands including Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees...
