M. Saffell Gardner
M. Saffell Gardner "Mt. Vernon Haiku", Sumi Ink on Watercolor Paper

2018

About the Item

This monochrome abstract work by M. Saffell Gardner is a sumi ink on watercolor paper piece that evokes the feelings of a dark American poem. Sumi ink, also called inksticks, is made mainly from soot of burnt lamp oil or pinewood, animal glue and perfume and is fine grained with a light, slightly ringing sound when tapped. Traditional to East Asian cultures, they have been highly prized and collected for the decoration that is applied to the stick itself, synthesizing the tool with the medium. Gardner's usage of it is evocative in the darkness it conveys. Measurements for Painting without frame: 18 Inches W X 33 Inches. M. Saffell Gardner is a Michigan and Detroit artist who earned both his BFA and MFA in painting from Wayne State University. His talents run the gamut of painting, mixed media, murals, art history, curating, and teaching. In 2000, Mr. Gardner was selected as the Chivas Regal Artist in Residence at the Charles H. Wright Museum. Among his accomplishments and exhibitions has been "The Venice Biennale 2013, co-curating “Vision in a Cornfield” for the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit in 2013, a survey exhibit at gallery 9338 Campau in 2014, participation in Artprize in 2014, and being awarded a Kresge Fellowship in 2015. Gardner’s work is in the permanent collection of The Henry Ford Hospital, Blue Cross Blue Shield, DMC, Total Healthcare, The Federal Reserve Chicago, Renaissance High School and Southeastern High School and Detroit School of the Arts. He has exhibited throughout the United States, Jamaica, Brazil and Ghana, Africa.

"Icarus Suspended" Abstract Mythical Figurative Mixed Media
By Michael Ayrton
Located in Detroit, MI
“Icarus Suspended” is an extraordinary painting of Ayrton's obsession with flight, myths, mirrors and mazes. This complex piece shows a figure in flight, frozen in action, either swooping down or, perhaps, falling to earth. Named after the Greek mythological figure, Icarus, who along with his father attempted to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. Flying too close to the sun the wax melted and both fell to earth. The positioning of Ayrton's figure is reminiscent of "The Fall of Icarus" by Jacob Peter Gowy, Museo Nacional del Prado. This is part of a series of artworks on Icarus some sculptural and some three-dimensional paintings on canvas. Verso contains gallery label Matthiesen Gallery, 142 Bond St., London, England, with a signature and text in upper right corner: "To Morton Schotnick. Bought on the occasion of The Archives of American Arts Tour to London, England. October 10, 1961. Michael Ayrton...

"Untitled Abstract" Oil on Board, Abstract Expressionist, Signed by the Artist
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY The energy and gusto of the applied paint in "Untitled Abstract" appears close to violent except for the calming influence of the circle in the middle. The red circle tempers the movement a little and brings all the strokes and wild directions into a harmony that is bursting with life. This is an extraordinarily expressive painting by Simpson. Simpson became the first African American to receive a prestigious five-year fellowship from the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Education fund and left South Carolina in 1949 for New York City after he finished high school. He attended New York University and Cooper Union while working in the frame shop of Herbert Benevy. Many well-known artists came to the frame shop and in time critiqued Simpson's work and developed a relationship with him. At NYU Simpson became acquainted with Hale Woodruff...
