About the Item
Abstract Composition, original painting by Pierre Coquet (1926 - 2021)
Oil on canvas
Fram with a natural oak floating frame
33 x 41 x 2,5 cm ( 38 x 46 x 3,5 frame inclued )
Painting structured by a network of irregular geometric shapes, mainly rectangles and polygonal forms outlined with blue-green lines. The composition is dense, with an even distribution of forms across the entire surface. The paint is applied in thin to medium layers, with visible brushstrokes and horizontal and vertical texture effects across the surface.
The palette is soft and cool, dominated by greens, muted blues, pale yellows, beiges, and subdued pinks. Accents of off-white and light orange create contrast. Some areas feature light-toned stripes or bands, enhancing the segmented appearance of the surface.
Pierre Coquet's abstract paintings represent a large part of his artistic output.
His constant search for balance between form and color, as well as his passion for Nicolas de Staël, André Lanskoy, Alfred Manessier... lead him down different paths from what we typically know of his work. His painting style is powerful and considered: lines stretch across the canvas, and harmonious brushstrokes, applied with restraint, reveal a deep sensitivity to color.
Provenance: Artist’s studio (stamped and numbered on the back)
Pierre Coquet (1926–2021) was a French painter born in Lima, near Lyon, France. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon in 1942 and studied under Antoine Chartres, Henri Vielly, and René Chancrin. He won an award in 1945 and joined a movement that sought to exist outside of any established school ending in "ism" (like Impressionism, Cubism, etc.). This movement, situated between figuration and the rebirth of abstract art, brought together young artists under thirty who refused to submit to any particular technique.
"Sanzism" (literally meaning "without ism") included, among others, painters such as James Bansac, Roger Bravard, André Chaix, Jean Mélinand, Paul Clair, André Cottavoz, Pierre Doye, Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, André Lauran, Édouard Mouriquand, Pierre Palué, Paul Philibert-Charrin, Antoine Sanner, and Françoise Juvin. The latter became his wife in 1948.
In 1949, he took part in an exhibition in Geneva, at the Musée de l’Athénée, titled “Eleven French Painters”, alongside Jacques Truphémus and Jean Fusaro. Françoise and Pierre settled in Paris in 1950. There, he met Alexandre Garbell, who encouraged him and whose classes he attended at his academy on Boulevard de Clichy.
While working as an art teacher at the Corvisart School in Paris, he continued to paint extensively alongside his teaching career.
His main subjects included “assemblages of objects” reminiscent of Giorgio Morandi, Paris rooftops, still lifes, human figures in various settings, and abstraction.
A sincere and modest man, introspective and deeply contemplative, he liked to express his belief that “all painters face the same difficulties when trying to express ineffable emotions through painting. Everything is possible, as long as it’s true,” Pierre would say.
I have known Pierre for a long time and have organized several exhibitions featuring his paintings. I now manage his entire studio, offering beautiful figurative and abstract works—paintings and numerous drawings of various sizes.
Pierre worked in his studio every day—he needed it. Painting was vital to him.
Pierre Coquet’s paintings are part of the collection at the Musée Paul Dini in Villefranche. This well-known museum has frequently exhibited works by the “Sanzist” group.

Pierre was very sensitive to abstract paintings. He did a lot of abstract works melting colors and shapes in different atmosphere and style. Nevertheless he could come back to figuration and again to abstraction with no precise period of time. Abstract paintings by Pierre Coquet represent a large part of his production.
The constant search for balance between shapes and colors as well as his passion for Nicolas de Staël, André Lanskoy, Alfred Mannessier… takes him on different paths from what we know of him.
His way of painting is strong and thoughtful, the lines stretch out and the harmonious touches, applied with sobriety, reveal a great sense of color.
