About the Item

Peter Liashkov (b. 1939) French, Russian, Argentine, American artist "Life and Death (Two Figures)," 1966 Oil on board (mixed media with collage) Hand signed and dated upper left: Dimensions: 48" H x 48" W BIOGRAPHY Of Russian descent, born in Rouen, France, he first lived in Argentina and then moved to Los Angeles, California. His work is mostly figurative, in the realist manner, but there is an figural abstract quality to many of his prints. This one has a mod brutalist quality to it with baroque elements to it. He is one of those artists with a broad range. From figuration to abstraction, expressionist painting, drawing and digital prints. He has collaborated on a series of digital prints with photographer Don Saban. The prints are based on photograph and drawing works gathered during his childhood years as the son of immigrants living in the provinces of Argentina with iconic references to Argentine culture, such as the gaucho, school uniforms, film, and song. Primarily a contemporary artist known for his painting and drawings of the human figure, Liashkov has also delved into sculpture as a medium. From an interview with the artist. "My influences are interesting because I grew up in this kind of bubble of Russian Impressionism. Russian Impressionism is very much like Sargent, using bravura painting. That style was my background. But, I went back to Europe a couple of times to soak up Velazquez and Rembrandt and all that stuff. After I graduated from Otis Art Institute, I went back to Europe for the second time. I went to Germany and at the time Germany was booming as an art capital in the 70s. Pop art, Robert Rauschenberg and Claes Oldenberg were all over the place in Europe... I was much more interested in German artists like Joseph Beuys and Wolf Vostell who were sort of products of a European history with all the baggage of post-war stuff". For more than three decades, Liashkov divided his time between his studio practice and a full-time teaching position at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. STUDIES 1961 Bachelor’s degree in Slavic Languages from the University of California, Los Angeles, USA. 1967 MFA, Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, USA. COLLECTIONS San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, USA. University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, USA. San Francisco Museum of Art, USA. Cleveland Center of Contemporary Art, USA. Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan. Centro Cultural San Ángel, Mexico. His work is rooted in the human figure; in mixed media techniques on unusual grounds like synskin, fiberglass mesh and other translucent materials. Currently, his primary interest is reflecting on the ever-changing richness of Los Angeles since his immigration here 65 years ago. He is Professor Emeritus at the Art Center College of Design, and has traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. Since retiring from teaching he has done residencies in Russia, Norway, Argentina and the U.S.A.
