Smith studied commercial art and design at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and later at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1921, he moved to Colorado to study under John E. Thompson, a pioneering modernist artist who greatly influenced Smith’s style. Smith became an integral part of the Denver art scene. He taught at the Denver Academy of Fine and Applied Arts starting in 1923, the same year his work was first displayed at the Denver Art Museum. His paintings were also added to the museum's Anne Evans collection, and one of his works was featured in the 1959 Western Heritage exhibition catalogue.
