Natalya Mougenot
Abstract expressionism vivid spiritual oil pastels on paper "Angel"

2023

About the Item

This painting "Angel", created in the style of abstract expressionism and spiritual symbolism, was done by French artist Natalya Mougenot during a challenging period in her life. She needed to believe that there are invisible forces that may help us, and through this artwork, she sought to express that deep spiritual connection. The piece combines the expressive, energetic use of oil pastels with abstract forms, where an angelic figure emerges through fluid, dynamic lines and vibrant colors. The central shape, reminiscent of a triangular angel, is surrounded by a burst of pinks, purples, and oranges, which create a sense of movement and energy, mirroring the unseen forces that guide and protect us. Loose, expressive brushstrokes evoke a sense of motion, as if the angel is in constant movement, offering support and guidance. Subtle patches of green and yellow introduce contrast, deepening the spiritual atmosphere and enhancing the complexity of the piece. This painting is particularly meaningful to the artist, as it reflects her personal journey and her belief in a higher, invisible realm. It was also submitted to an art competition centered on the theme of Angels, where it was selected as a semi-finalist, a testament to its emotional depth and spiritual resonance. Through its use of color and form, Mougenot beautifully communicates the idea that we are connected to a higher, invisible world, where angels watch over us and provide unseen guidance during life's challenges. Created with oil pastels on heavyweight professional acid-free paper, this artwork is sold unframed, giving you the freedom to frame it according to your personal taste and the style of your space. Pictures of the painting framed are provided for inspiration. The artwork is signed on the front and back by the artist, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring its provenance. As a one-of-a-kind original piece, it will be carefully packaged for international shipping from France to ensure it arrives in perfect condition. About the Artist: Natalya Mougenot, born in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, in 1981, is a contemporary French artist who has lived in Lyon, France, since 2003. Raised in a multicultural environment during the Soviet era, her diverse cultural influences have shaped her distinctive artistic vision. What began as a personal, therapeutic outlet has evolved into a deeper exploration of themes like women’s empowerment, modern identity, and resilience. Known for her emotionally charged and bold works, Mougenot blends abstraction, nature, and florals to reflect the complexities of contemporary life. Her unique style, often influenced by art brut and naive art, invites viewers to connect with her transformative perspective on the world. Mougenot’s works are held in private collections globally, and her instantly recognizable style—marked by expressive brushstrokes and a powerful use of color—engages viewers both emotionally and visually. Please note that colors may vary slightly between the actual painting and the image on your screen due to lighting and monitor settings.

Born in New York City to Russian immigrant parents, Louis and Esther Kerewsky, she changed her surname to "Carewe" in 1930. Carewe attended Columbia University and studied further with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at Atelier 17 in New York, with Hans Hoffman in New York and Provincetown, Massachusetts, and at the New School for Social Research. During World War II Carewe worked as an advertising copywriter and artist for agencies in New York. She became a prolific abstract artist in a range of media, including tapestry designs for the Aubusson tapestry carpet company in France, felt banners, collage reliefs, and what she termed "blown paintings," which were assemblages (predominantly of children's toy components) overlaid with spray paint. One of the most common subjects in her semi abstract paintings was New York City at night. She also worked in traditional artistic media, including watercolors, oils, lithographs and pastels. In October 1944, she married Marvin Small (formerly Smalheiser, executive for Carter's Little Liver Pills). They had one child, John Marvin, in June 1947. Carewe had her first one-woman show in Poughkeepsie in 1947, after which she opened in New York City at the ACA Gallery in 1948. She had some twenty other American solo shows and her works hung in many exhibits across the United States as well as in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Her works are represented in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum, Musée de l'Arte Moderne, Paris, Brandeis University, the Butler Art Institute, Howard University, the Tel Aviv Museum and the National Museum in Djakarta, Indonesia. Her work has been described by French critics as "violent, colorful art, in hard contrasts, not exempt from cold lyricism." ["Les Girls...
