About the Item
Original oil paint on heavy archival paper abstract by the American artist, Martin Rosenthal. Bold, vibrant colors. Signed lower right by the artist and dated 1964. Condition is good. No restorations. Small piece of top right corner missing. Not visible under matting. Professionally matted. Presently unframed. Framing options are available. Provenance: A Florida estate.
Martin Rosenthal was an American painter born in 1899 in Woburn, Massachusetts. He would become influenced by the movements of the early 1900s — an era of experimentation and the dawn of expressionism and various styles of abstraction.
At the Modern Art Exhibition of 1934, Rosenthal’s work was singled out from among exhibited pieces by Chagall, Modigliani, Zorach, and Pissarro.
Rosenthal spent the greater part of his life in and around New York City, but traveled to Madagascar, Spain, and Japan. He primarily painted in the basement of a small home he shared with his mother in Queens, NY.
In time, his works began to grow larger in size and brighter in color. Eventually, he constructed some canvases almost too large to be removed from the basement. Many of Rosenthal’s works were never seen until his death in 1974.

Martin Rosenthal
Martin Rosenthal 1899-1974 Artist Martin Rosenthal was born in Woburn, MA. He completed military service in 1925 and then studied at the Art Students League with classmates John Sloan, Robert Henri and Boardman Robinson. As George Luks' associate at the Luks School of Painting - he also taught at Luks' summer home. The Modern Art Exhibition of 1934 was proclaimed by the press: "One of the most comprehensive exhibitions of modern art ever staged outside of a museum." Rosenthal's work was singled out from among exhibited pieces by Chagall, Modigliani, Zorach, and Pissarro. After this, Rosenthal exhibited very little but continued to paint. Sometime in the late 1960’s, the “Future People” series appeared... Rosenthal painted in the dark basement of a small home he shared with his mother in Queens, NY. In time, the works began to grow larger in size and brighter in color - as if to mock the artist’s surroundings. Eventually, he constructed some canvases almost too large to be removed from the basement. Rosenthal never really wanted to sell his “Future People.” Instead he surrounded himself with them like friends. These works were never seen until after Martin’s death in 1974. LOOKING FOR HAPPINESS
Like "el dorado", a cultural construction, a myth, the Looking for happiness series talks about the illusion of happiness.
Using coordinates between different geographical points and world views, seeking to generate a dialogue between stories.
In this way, places speak to tell us about degraded utopias, religious crusades, martyrs and oppressors, wars, victories, and defeats. All searches for what cannot be found.
The infinite existing possibilities, in this continuous present and its accumulation, to be history. The utopian idea of achieving completeness or completeness.
The transformation of the fabric into jewelry, the transmutation that moves from the sacred to the economic.
The "object of desire" is the engine of life and its different permutations.
