Jylian Gustlin
Entropy 42 / contemporary color - math + sciene + art

2018

About the Item

Abstract geometric mixed media painting with acrylic, ink, polymers, and layers of complex and beautiful lines and marks that delve into the connection between mathematics and science, and how it connects with art, which is the focus of Gustlin's contemporary paintings. 'Entropy 42' is 48 x 48 inches. Finished with an elegant and sophisticated satin varnish.. Wired and ready to hang and enjoy. Framing is not required. Artist signed, dated and titled Verso. Condition is excellent. Jylian Gustlin explores how science and mathematics intersect with art in her abstract and representational mixed media paintings, created with acrylic on wood panels, and other media — ink, gouache, pencils and resins — by immersing herself in complex themes that are the basis of her work. Gustlin’s paintings are often based on the Fibonacci mathematical theories, and Entropy in thermodynamics. Fibonacci’ and ‘Entropy’ are two reoccurring themes that are a focus of her work. Gustiln also makes paintings that are figurative in nature, that are also layered with complex symbolism, and created with the same brilliant palette of vivid color and iconic Gustlin patterns that is associated with her work. The Fibonacci mathematical theory is based on the numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and so on. Fibonacci mathematical calculations create rectangles and shell spirals based on the incrementally increasing numbers. Jylian Gustlin explores the relationship of Fibonacci numbers to the petals on flowers and how to use these ideas in paintings as well as the relationship of Fibonacci to musical scales and how the 5-tone scale, 8-tone scale, and 13-tone scale. Entropy comes from a principle of thermodynamics dealing with energy. It usually refers to the idea that everything in the universe eventually moves from order to disorder, and entropy is the measurement of that change. Jylian Gustlin’s paintings are process driven – when looking at her work there is a sense the painting was “made” with effort, intention and even strength. The artist starts with an idea and then intuitively works to its conclusion. By adding and then subtracting information, brushwork, colors and lines, the work comes into being. Some of Gustlin’s paintings are finished with a soft gloss varnish that reveals the history of the work through line and brushstrokes, while others have a hard resin finish that encases the work under a thick glossy veneer. All of Jylian Gustlin’s paintings ignite conversation while also standing soundly without words. The artist has exhibited all over the US, and her work is collected worldwide.
