James Meek
Southwestern artist James Meek was an active member of the Taos, New Mexico art colony. Known for his abstract oil paintings, he spent his summers in Taos beginning in 1958 and in the mid 1960s he resigned an administration position with the Rocky Ford, CO public schools to move to Taos and devote full time to painting. A Tennessee native, he was born October 2, 1928, received his B.A. degree from Murray State College (now University), Murray, KY in 1951 and a his M.A. from Union University, Jackson, TN in 1952. He studied design, color and art history with Clara Eagle, drawing with Don Fenigan, and painting with Charles Bunnell and Charles Dorn. After serving in the Army from 1952-1954, he began teaching in Rocky Ford, CO where he was first an art instructor and, later, art director for the system and principal of Jefferson Junior High School. He also taught adult education night classes in painting for four years while with the school system. Among exhibitions in which he participated: Museum of New Mexico Art Gallery Biennial, Murray (College) Alumni Invitational, Ten-year retrospective exhibition Creative Art Guild - Colorado, National Art Roundup - Las Vegas, NV, Contemporary Art Society Exhibition - Colorado Fine Arts Center - 1960.

Born to immigrant parents from the Carpathian region in Slovakia, Marecak grew up with his family in the farming community of Bennett’s Corners, now part of the town of Brunswick, near Cleveland, Ohio. When he turned twelve, his family moved to a multi-ethnic neighborhood of Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, and Slovenians in Cleveland. His childhood household cherished the customs and Slavic folk tales from the Old Country that later strongly influenced his work as a professional artist. His junior and senior high projects earned him a full scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Art (1938-1942) where he studied with Henry George Keller whose work was included in the 1913 New York Armory Show. In 1940 Marecak also taught at the Museum School of the Cleveland Institute.
Before being drafted into the military in 1942, he briefly attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art near Detroit, one of the nation’s leading graduate schools of art, architecture, and design. Marecak’s studies at Cranbrook with painter Zoltan Sepeshy...

About the Artist:
A Denver native, Arnest studied with Helen Perry at East High School who is accredited to having identified many of Colorado’s talented artists. At Perry’s recommendation Arnest benefited from supplemental instruction at the newly founded Kirkland School of Art and at the School of Fine Art and Design operated by Colorado artist Frank Mechau.
Following graduation from East, Arnest enrolled at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, where he studied with Boardman Robinson and Henry Varnum Poor.
In 1940 Arnest was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in painting which he spent in San Francisco. That same year San Francisco Museum of Art had a one-man show for Arnest, the first of many in his professional career. Other exhibitions included the Whitney Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, National Academy of Design, Carnegie Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
