About the Artist:
Howard Schleeter (1903-1976) was a pivotal figure in New Mexico’s modern art scene. Born in New York, Schleeter’s formal art education began at the Albright Art School in Buffalo, though he considered himself primarily self-taught. His early years included an encounter with Charles Lindbergh while working as an airplane mechanic. Schleeter eventually made the decisive move to New Mexico in 1929, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.
In the 1930s, Schleeter studied under artist Brooks Willis and experimented with various mediums, including gouache, watercolor, oil, scratchboard, and engraving. His career blossomed with commissions from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression, and he completed five murals for the Melrose Public School library, along with several other significant projects in New Mexico and Washington, D.C.
Schleeter’s work, primarily abstract in nature, drew on the vibrant Southwestern landscape and culture. In 1945, the Encyclopedia Britannica referred to him as “an artist’s artist.” He gained further recognition for his contributions to New Mexico's artistic legacy and taught at the University of New Mexico in the 1950s.
Schleeter's lasting impact on American modern art, particularly in New Mexico, is exemplified through his unique artistic vision and deep connection to the region.

A celebrated Missouri Regionalist painter and printmaker, Frederick E. Shane was known for his compelling genre scenes, landscapes, seascapes, and portraits in a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, gouache, tempera, and lithography. While fundamentally a realist, Shane often incorporated elements of abstraction, expressionism, and surrealism, adding depth and emotion to his compositions.
During the summers of 1925-26, Shane studied under Randall Davey at the Broadmoor Academy in Colorado Springs, an institution founded in 1919 by philanthropists Spencer and Julie Penrose. Shane remained closely connected to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Academy’s successor, throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, participating in Artists West of the Mississippi exhibitions and forming lasting friendships with key figures like Boardman Robinson and Adolph Dehn...
