About the Item
By using references to navigational coastal profiling and by borrowing and subverting compositional structures of the 19th century American landscape painters I examine how modern landscapes came to be spatially constructed. Through a combination of on-site field studies and larger studio pieces I make bodies of work that reflect the individual characteristics of a specific place while retaining a critical awareness of the landscape genre. This practice, while fully absorbed into the cliché of modern landscape painting, is not innocuous. It is rooted in a history of globalism and environmental dominance. Through my work I explore this spatial language at times allowing individual works to teeter into abstraction. The works in Rise look specifically at how we will navigate and view a rapidly changing physical world.

For the last 10 years Travis Walker has made landscape paintings about Jackson Hole, a place that never ceases to inspire him to pick up his brushes. He works on location, capturing the essence of the seemingly mundane scenes around town: an old salon, a decaying house with a fence made of skis, a vintage trailer park. His work is influenced by the work of American regionalists Edward Hopper and Grant Wood, Japanese printmaking, and German Expressionism.
Travis Walker is the founder and director of Teton Artlab, a nonprofit arts organization that provides studio space for artists. He was born in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, and earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2000 from Virginia Commonwealth University. "My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour.
I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects.
I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell...
