Antonio Puri
Tantric View: spiritual minimalist abstract sculpture painting w/ tiny red beads

2020

About the Item

Antonio Puri's "Tantric View" is an intimately-scaled minimalism diptych (two paneled) sculptural painting built from tiny beads adhered to the canvas in a range of red hues, creating deep texture. This piece is from the "Tantra" series, a meditative, spiritual group of works that draw on the artist's Buddhist practices he learned as a child growing up near Buddhist monks in India. Puri's current exhibition, "Tantric Explosion" is on view in Bogota, Colombia, where the artist currently lives and works. The two panels can be hung directly next to each other, or with a few inches of space separating them. They are signed, titled, and dated on the back. Includes all hanging hardware and ready to install. There is no need for additional framing. "I am interested in comparing connections between my eastern roots and my western experiences. I embrace the possibility that we can exist in a world free from labels." - Antonio Puri Puri was born in Chandigarh, Punjab, India and raised in the Himalayas around Buddhist monks before studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Coe College, and the University of Iowa. He established his studio in Philadelphia where he practiced for many years before relocating to Bogotá, Colombia. During this time, Puri completed several artist residencies all over the world, including in New York, Hungary, Bulgaria, Colombia, South Africa, Serbia, Mauritius, India, Denmark, Trinidad and Tobago, and Romania. Puri’s range of geographical and cultural experiences are embedded in his work, where he commonly explores the relationships between his eastern and western cultural connections. Puri has exhibited his work all over the world, including at the Museo de Arte del Tolima in Colombia; Sundaram Tagore Gallery Singapore; Government Museum and Art Gallery Chandigarh, India; Art Depot, Austria; La Cometa Gallery, Bogota; Museo Casa Conde Rul, Mexico; The Guild, NY; Nu Art Gallery in Santa Fe; Twelve Gates, Philadelphia; Philadelphia Art Alliance; Noyes Museum, NJ; Essl Museum, Austria; Hammond Museum, NY; Queens Museum, NY; Sundaram Tagore Gallery, NY; Gallery Espace, New Delhi; Edsviks Konsthall, Stockholm; MOP Gallery, Sydney; Musee du Chateau, France; Corcoran Gallery in DC; and Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, among others. Galaxy: contemporary canvas painting w/ imagery of stars, sun, universe & space
By Joseph McAleer
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"Galaxy" is an acrylic on canvas painting with textured brushwork depicting stars and space in the universe. It is signed on the back. Edges are neatly finished and painted black, so there is no need for additional framing. Every purchase comes with a free, hardcover copy of the beautiful illustrated new book, "Joseph McAleer: Sixty Years." "Joe McAleer's paintings engage us as participants in a complex perceptual game. Comprised of contrasting patterns of color, texture, and form, which fill the canvas from edge to edge, his restless abstractions elude a fleeting encounter. Rather, they absorb our attention with rhythmic structures and visual anomalies designed to stimulate and perplex our senses. McAleer's kaleidoscopic abstractions have their basis in the humble Modernist's grid,......" - Joe Houston, Author "Optic Nerve, Perceptual Art of the 1960s"; Curator, Hallmark Art Collection. McAleer is an artist and lifelong educator based in NJ. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rowan University, and has exhibited his work up and down the east coast, including major solo exhibitions at Bridgette Mayer Gallery and Locks Gallery...
