About the Item
Anatoly Kost “Snow haze”
2012 y. Canvas.Oil. Painting
Flat: 72/53 cm. Framed: 76/57 cm.
"Snow Haze" is an exploration of the ephemeral nature of winter’s atmosphere—where snowfall blurs the boundaries between sky and earth, turning the landscape into an abstract veil of movement and light. The artist captures this fleeting moment with layered brushstrokes, creating an interplay of black, earthy ochres, and icy blues that suggest both structure and dissolution. The composition is filled with energy, as if the storm is in motion, revealing glimpses of form beneath the haze.
Anatoly Kost’s abstract approach transforms the cold and quiet of winter into a dynamic, almost musical experience. The crisscrossing dark lines act as architectural elements within the misty surroundings, evoking the skeletal remains of trees, frozen rivers, or distant horizons lost in snowfall. Through bold yet controlled strokes, Kost invites the viewer to sense the contrast between the weight of winter’s silence and the hidden tension of movement beneath it.
Concept
Created in 2012 in Anatoly Kost’s Volyn workshop, Snow Haze is part of the artist’s renowned winter series, which delves into the emotional and sensory qualities of seasonal landscapes through abstraction. This painting has been showcased in several exhibitions, solidifying its place in Kost’s legacy of contemporary expressionism.
A master of "contemp-abstraction," Anatoly Kost fuses the principles of abstract expressionism with philosophical inquiry. His works, influenced by natural phenomena and human perception, embody a deep emotional resonance. He describes his method as ArtHouse abstraction—a form of visual storytelling where movement, color, and form evoke memory and sensation rather than literal representation.
A striking addition to any contemporary art collection, Snow Haze offers a timeless meditation on nature’s fleeting moments, making it a captivating piece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

About the Series:
For Dray, Philosophy deals in the abstract and abstraction is an indispensable tool in art and culture. Through his paintings, he reasserts that abstraction has been a part of humanity, all cultures in all ages. It’s an indispensable tool, as we create symbols, vessels to fill with allusions and messages. The resulting artwork have a strong sense of purpose.
Each painting contains hundreds of hand coloured trapezoid shapes, hand drawn with a sharp blade onto silver or gold leaf. Each coloured shape can be interpreted to represent an ‘atomic’ element. On its own a block of colour is insignificant but seen as part of a whole it becomes dynamic and alive reflecting on how nature works. The phenomena of light is also important to the work. The light of the sun in a room illuminates and reflects off the paintings as they come alive and change through time.
About the Artist:
Benjamin Dray is an artist based in Sydney, Australia. He completed his formal art education in Australia and has painted continuously for the last 30 years living and working in his studio home on Scotland Island...

On a summer morning in 1993 a 22 years old young came to Florida from a small old town in the central area of Cuba called Santa Clara. In his bag, he brought no more than two valuable things, his worn-out brushes and a great dream. The dream to one day become a professional artist in this new land that welcomed him with open arms.
Captivated by his love for the beauty of the Landscapes, his last works are what he sees even in the most common scenes: the close relationship of life and who we are with the natural world around us that asks us to respect and care for it.
Artist Statement:
" I like to scrutinize in the simple things, sometimes it is there where the lost painting is waiting to be found by the painter's eyes.
The landscape painting gives me the opportunity to establish a close relationship with the natural world and humbly capture on a canvas a little of its beauty listening to its voice that reminds us how valuable we are and how much we should love it".
