Richard Anuszkiewicz Near and Far Acuity, 1957 Gouache and watercolor painting Hand signed and dated 1957 by Richard Anuszkiewicz on the right front Frame included Anuszkiewicz' artworks from the late 1950s are rarely found on the market. This historic painting is one of the works that helped launch the artist's career. It was done in 1957 - the year the artist arrived in New York. Near and Far Acuity has been removed from its original frame, and re-framed in an elegant wood frame with conservation materials and UV plexiglass. The original gallery label from The Contemporaries has been preserved and affixed to the new backing, and the collector who acquires this work will also be provided with a copy of the original receipt - signed by Karl Lunde (director of the Contemporaries and author of a major monograph on the artist). Measurements: Frame: 32 x 28 x 2 inches Artwork: 21 x 25 inches This work was first exhibited in the groundbreaking, and career-making 1960 exhibition at The Contemporaries gallery (New York, February 29, 1960 - March 19, 1960) and was featured in the exhibition catalogue, shown in the images here. In his essay entitled "Richard Anuszkiewicz: Color Precisionist" by art historian John T. Spike, he writes, "In the spring of '57, Richard Anuszkiewicz left Ohio for good. "I was ready. I came to New York with a substantial amount of work. I was ready to go around to the galleries and I was prepared because I really had something. I had an idea. I had a series of paintings that showed this idea and I felt good about it and I felt now that's the only place for me to be." A friend helped him get a job touching up the plaster models of classical temples and statues in the Junior Museum of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He took off six months the next year to travel around Europe in a Volkswagen, also seeing some places in North Africa. "When I came back, I remember taking my work around to the galleries and receiving interesting comments — positive comments from the various people. But Abstract Expressionism was very popular. My things were very hard-edged, very strong in color — a use of color that nobody was using. Everybody would say. 'Oh, they are nice, but so hard to look at. They hurt my eyes". Leo Castelli considered him seriously but the gallery was developing a specialization in pop artists like Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. "I can remember going to Martha Jackson and having her look at the work and she would put her hands straight out in front of her and block out parts of the painting with her hand and she'd say, mmm no rest areas." Estate of Giovanni and Dagmar Migliuolo, NYC. Giovanni Migliuolo is the former Italian Ambassador to the United Nations, USSR and Egypt. Yuri Larin, also Yuriy Larin (1936–2014) is a Russian painter and graphic artist, a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1977. Larin was born in Moscow to the family of a key Soviet political leader, Nikolay Bukharin, and Anna Larina. Following the arrests of his parents in 1938 and until 1946, he lived with his relatives, and following the arrest of his step-father, he was taken to an orphanage near Stalingrad. A hydraulic engineer by training, he worked at the construction of the Saratov Hydro-Electric Plant and at design institutions. In 1960, he began his studies at the department of drawing and painting of the Krupskaya People’s University of Arts, and then, from 1965 until 1970, he studied at the department of art design at the Moscow State Higher School of Arts and Industry (the former Stroganov Institution). His career as a professional artist began in the early 1970s. From 1970 until 1986, he taught at the Moscow 1905 Memorial Arts School. His letter to prof. Vittorio Strada sent in 1980 contained the first statement of his artistic method he would later dub the “concept of the limit state”. He quit teaching after a serious illness, when he lost the ability to use his right hand. He only worked with his left hand since 1986. He died and was buried in Moscow. Trofimov) 1970 Yuriy Larin graduated from Moscow State Higher Art-Industry School ( Stragonovka), faculty of artwork development (industrial design), enrolled in 1965; Starts his career of a professional artist; from 1970 to 1986 teaches at Moscow Academy of Art in remembrance of 1905; here starts long creative cooperation with V.A.Volkov, the son of the prominent Soviet artist A.N.Volkov. Gets married. The wife - Inga Yakovlevna Ballod, an architect by training, writer and journalist. 1970-1974 Worked from life on landscapes (watercolor and oil). Works in traditional realistic direction, the main aim is to deliver different conditions of the nature (landscape conditions) 1972 Welcomes his son Nikolay from 1972 Takes part in Moscow, Russian and All-Union exhibitions; the second half of the 1970s Works on portraits, still-lifes, nude, continuing working on landscapes 1974 Trip to Kuban as a part of the group of the Union of Artist of RSFSR, the creation of watercolor landscapes of local nature, which set the beginning of the cycle “Caucasus”; Yuriy Larin works harder on the creation of his own formal signature, and on his own theory of art (for details see the letter of Y.Larin to V.Strada) 1975 First trip to the House of Creativity of the Union of Artists “Goryachiy Klyuch”, creation of new watercolors of Caucasus cycle. 1976 The end of the nature period. As a turning point in the artist’s career was a period when he worked at the House of Creativity “Cheluskinskaya” near Moscow. Starting from this period landscapes, portraits and still-lifes are drawn from memory. Using only some pencil sketches that are done from real life. Long walks around the neighborhoods of Cheluskinskaya, trips to Abramtsevo, Klazma served as a strong impetus to the development of cycle of Moscow region landscapes. 1977 Became part of Moscow Union of Artists in USSR. “Watercolors of Y.B.Larin are the world of senciar relationships between the artist and nature. The plots of his works are extremely simple, unsophisticated, but behind all that there is a whole concept: the living nature is shaped by the eyes of the artist into one-piece space masses, human creations as ships, cranes, bridges get soft, kind forms; dissolved they become part of complete, modern and artistically convincing form” (V.A.Volkov. From the reference given to Y.Larin to become part of Moscow Union of Artists in 1975) “Yuriy Borisovich Larin appears to me as a serious and deep artist,... mature artist. His watercolors are of proof of having coloristic gift, high culture and material understanding” (M.P.Miturich. From the reference given to Y.Larin to become part of Moscow Union of Artists in 1975) 1977 Yuriy Larin directs a group of young Moscow artists in their trip to Olskiy area of Magadan region. Creates a series of landscapes of Magadan nature. 1980 In the letter to V.Strada finally justifies the theoretical part of his artistic method, later calls it the concept of limit state. The end of the 1970s - the beginning of the 1980s Devoted four years to the translation of the book of S.Cohen, professor of Princeton University, about N.I.Bukharin. Ye.A.Gnedin was helping him to translate the book, they were meeting every Thursday. Afterwards, while publishing the Russian version of the book in the USA the translators Y.LArin and Ye.Gnedin were credited under pseudonyms Ye. and Y. Chetvergovy. Yevgeniy Alexandrovich Gnedin is a prominent Soviet diplomat, staff member of M.M. Litvinov, died in 1983. Y.Larin considers him to be one of the most incredible people of the XX century. Meets famous collectionner from Moscow Ya.Ye. Rubinshtein, who buys six works of the artist (oil and watercolor); Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1980 The artist creates the cycle of the watercolors of Moscow region in winter, the part of which will be purchased by Ya.Ye. Rubinstein and the Russian Museum; V.Volkov indicated in the works “a new approach to the light” Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1982 First own exhibition in Moscow Drama Theatre after M.N.Yermolova (together with Ye.N.Kravchenko). Mostly presented the paintings of the last decade that were painted in the central Russia, Krasnodar and Magadan regions. The exhibition and the discussion that took place afterwards helped to open up Y.Larin. He met the ambassador of Italy to USSR Giovanni Migliuolo and became friends for a long period of time. 1979-1985 Within a few years during summer vacations Yuriy Larin works in Baltic. Creates a cycle of graphic watercolors on German paperboard. The landscapes on the constructive base greatly differ from Moscow and Caucasus cycles. Fall, 1983 Trip to Armenia with his close friend Yu.M. Garushyants, historian. The result of that trip were thirty watercolor papers that continued the Caucasus cycle. 1985 In the almanac “Soviet Graphic” there is a publication about the watercolors of the artist that was written by G. Yelshevskaya. December, 1985 Underwent the neurosurgery; as a consequence the loss of strength and skill in his right hand. 1987 Death of his wife Inga Ballod  First personal exhibition overseas: exhibition of watercolors in the gallery Books&Company Art, NY, USA. Since then takes part in different foreign exhibitions. 1988 N.I.Bukharin’s rehabilitation, after that Yuriy Larin was able to change his patronymic “Borisovich” to “Nikolayevich” 1989 Gets married. Trofimov) 1970 Yuriy Larin graduated from Moscow State Higher Art-Industry School ( Stragonovka), faculty of artwork development (industrial design), enrolled in 1965; Starts his career of a professional artist; from 1970 to 1986 teaches at Moscow Academy of Art in remembrance of 1905; here starts long creative cooperation with V.A.Volkov, the son of the prominent Soviet artist A.N.Volkov. Gets married. The wife - Inga Yakovlevna Ballod, an architect by training, writer and journalist. 1970-1974 Worked from life on landscapes (watercolor and oil). Works in traditional realistic direction, the main aim is to deliver different conditions of the nature (landscape conditions) 1972 Welcomes his son Nikolay from 1972 Takes part in Moscow, Russian and All-Union exhibitions; the second half of the 1970s Works on portraits, still-lifes, nude, continuing working on landscapes 1974 Trip to Kuban as a part of the group of the Union of Artist of RSFSR, the creation of watercolor landscapes of local nature, which set the beginning of the cycle “Caucasus”; Yuriy Larin works harder on the creation of his own formal signature, and on his own theory of art (for details see the letter of Y.Larin to V.Strada) 1975 First trip to the House of Creativity of the Union of Artists “Goryachiy Klyuch”, creation of new watercolors of Caucasus cycle. 1976 The end of the nature period. As a turning point in the artist’s career was a period when he worked at the House of Creativity “Cheluskinskaya” near Moscow. Starting from this period landscapes, portraits and still-lifes are drawn from memory. Using only some pencil sketches that are done from real life. Long walks around the neighborhoods of Cheluskinskaya, trips to Abramtsevo, Klazma served as a strong impetus to the development of cycle of Moscow region landscapes. 1977 Became part of Moscow Union of Artists in USSR. “Watercolors of Y.B.Larin are the world of senciar relationships between the artist and nature. The plots of his works are extremely simple, unsophisticated, but behind all that there is a whole concept: the living nature is shaped by the eyes of the artist into one-piece space masses, human creations as ships, cranes, bridges get soft, kind forms; dissolved they become part of complete, modern and artistically convincing form” (V.A.Volkov. From the reference given to Y.Larin to become part of Moscow Union of Artists in 1975) “Yuriy Borisovich Larin appears to me as a serious and deep artist,... mature artist. His watercolors are of proof of having coloristic gift, high culture and material understanding” (M.P.Miturich. From the reference given to Y.Larin to become part of Moscow Union of Artists in 1975) 1977 Yuriy Larin directs a group of young Moscow artists in their trip to Olskiy area of Magadan region. Creates a series of landscapes of Magadan nature. 1980 In the letter to V.Strada finally justifies the theoretical part of his artistic method, later calls it the concept of limit state. The end of the 1970s - the beginning of the 1980s Devoted four years to the translation of the book of S.Cohen, professor of Princeton University, about N.I.Bukharin. Ye.A.Gnedin was helping him to translate the book, they were meeting every Thursday. Afterwards, while publishing the Russian version of the book in the USA the translators Y.LArin and Ye.Gnedin were credited under pseudonyms Ye. and Y. Chetvergovy. Yevgeniy Alexandrovich Gnedin is a prominent Soviet diplomat, staff member of M.M. Litvinov, died in 1983. Y.Larin considers him to be one of the most incredible people of the XX century. Meets famous collectionner from Moscow Ya.Ye. Rubinshtein, who buys six works of the artist (oil and watercolor); Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1980 The artist creates the cycle of the watercolors of Moscow region in winter, the part of which will be purchased by Ya.Ye. Rubinstein and the Russian Museum; V.Volkov indicated in the works “a new approach to the light” Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1982 First own exhibition in Moscow Drama Theatre after M.N.Yermolova (together with Ye.N.Kravchenko). Mostly presented the paintings of the last decade that were painted in the central Russia, Krasnodar and Magadan regions. The exhibition and the discussion that took place afterwards helped to open up Y.Larin. He met the ambassador of Italy to USSR Giovanni Migliuolo and became friends for a long period of time. 1979-1985 Within a few years during summer vacations Yuriy Larin works in Baltic. Creates a cycle of graphic watercolors on German paperboard. The landscapes on the constructive base greatly differ from Moscow and Caucasus cycles. Fall, 1983 Trip to Armenia with his close friend Yu.M. Garushyants, historian. The result of that trip were thirty watercolor papers that continued the Caucasus cycle. 1985 In the almanac “Soviet Graphic” there is a publication about the watercolors of the artist that was written by G. Yelshevskaya. December, 1985 Underwent the neurosurgery; as a consequence the loss of strength and skill in his right hand. 1987 Death of his wife Inga Ballod  First personal exhibition overseas: exhibition of watercolors in the gallery Books&Company Art, NY, USA. Sheila Elias (born in Chicago, Illinois) is an American artist. Her work is Neo Expressionist, Feminist Pop Art. Her works have been featured in exhibitions across North America and at the Liberty show at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Elias graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, lives and works in Miami, Florida and in New York City. As an artist and art historian, Elias works with the layers of life and art history, seeking in it a connection between art aesthetics and social consciousness. She has exhibited with diverse artists, Larry Rivers, Bob Stanley, Ford Crull, Sol LeWitt, Mark Tobey, Walter Darby Bannard, Clyde Butcher. Her work spans the disciplines of painting, digital mixed media, sculpture, installation and performance. Her inspiration to be an artist began with the work that Matisse created (La Cirque) in the library of the Art Institute of Chicago. Paul Wieghardt (from the Bauhaus School in Germany), was her art teacher at SAIC. She was influenced by the Marisol, Claes Oldenburg and Jean Dubuffet. Richard Andres (American, 1927-2013) White & Yellow, c. 1953 oil on canvas signed lower right, signed and titled verso 30 x 20 inches Richard Andres was born in Buffalo, New York in 1927. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1950, he was immediately drafted and served for two years in the army as a mural painter. He received his Master of Arts from Kent State in 1961. A frequent exhibitor at galleries and museums and winner of multiple May Show prizes, Andres taught art in the Cleveland Public Schools for 28 years, as well as teaching the University of Buffalo, the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Western Reserve University. Very little in Richard Andres’ childhood would have predicted his love of classical music, mid-century-modern architecture and certainly not his lifelong passion for art and in particular abstract art. Richard’s father, Raymond, had no more than a third-grade education, and his mother, Clara, was one of thirteen children – only three of whom lived into adulthood and none of whom attended high school. They lived, when Richard was a boy, in a dingy area of Buffalo, NY in a walk-up apartment situated above a tavern. Raymond and Clara supplemented the income from their factory jobs in the bar downstairs with Raymond playing ragtime on the piano and Clara serving drinks. This often left Richard and his two older brothers at home alone to fend for themselves. The two older boys, Raymond and Russell, were - unlike Richard- rather rough and tumble and entertained themselves with stickball, boxing and the like. Richard, on the other hand, from a very young age liked to draw, or better yet even, to paint with the small set of watercolors he received for Christmas one year. Paper, however, at the height of the depression, was hard to come by. Luckily, Clara used paper doilies as decoration for the apartment and Richard would contentedly paint and then cut up doilies, gluing the pieces together to create collages. At eight-years-old, he discovered the Albright-Knox Museum (then known as the Albright Art Gallery) and spent several hours a week there studying the paintings. He was particularly fond of Charles Burchfield‘s landscapes, enamored with their ‘messiness’ and thinking that they somehow captured more ‘feeling’ than works he was previously familiar with. For his tenth Christmas, he asked for and received a ‘how-to’ paint book by Elliot O’Hare. Through this self-teaching, he assembled the portfolio needed for acceptance to Buffalo Technical High School where he studied Advertising Arts. In his Junior year, he was encouraged to enter a watercolor painting, “Two Barns,” in the national 1944-45 Ingersoll Art Award Contest and was one of twelve grand prize winners – each one winning one hundred dollars. More importantly the painting was exhibited at the Carnegie Institute Galleries, which resulted in his winning a national scholarship to the Cleveland School of Art (The Cleveland Art Institute). He flourished at the art school under the tutelage of faculty members such as Carl Gaertner, as well as that of visiting artists such as William Sommer and Henry George Keller. He would say in later years that Gaertner, in particular, influenced his attitude toward life as well as art. “Gaertner,” Andres said, “believed that there was no need to be a ‘tortured artist’, that an artist should rather enjoy beauty, family, and life in general.” Free to spend his days as he chose, he wandered the Cleveland Art Museum for most of the hours he was not attending classes or painting; the remaining time was spent drinking coffee at a local hangout with art school friends – which is where he met fellow Henry Keller scholarship winner, Avis Johnson. Richard was immediately smitten with Avis, but being rather shy, it took him the entire summer of 1948 to build up his courage to ask her out. Over that summer he ‘thought about Avis’ and worked in a diner to save money. He also used the hundred-dollar prize money won in High School to visit the first Max Beckmann retrospective in the United States at the City Art Museum in St. Louis. Over a half century later he spoke of that exhibit with a reverence usually reserved for spiritual matters, “I walked in and it was like nothing I had ever seen before... the color...It just glowed.” Returning to campus in the Fall, the first thing he did was go to the coffee shop in hopes of finding Avis. He did, and she, upon seeing him, realized that she was also smitten with him. They quickly became known as ‘the couple’ on campus, and a year later, with Richard being drafted for the Korean war, they were quickly married by a Justice of the Peace, celebrating after with family at Avis’s Cleveland home. This poignant painting is done by the second generation Abstract Expressionist artist Ben Wilson - one of the youngest artists to be given a show at prestigious ACA Gallery in 1940. Ben Wilson was born in Philadelphia in 1913 to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Kiev and settled in New York City. He was educated in Manhattan public schools and graduated from City College in 1935. To gain exposure to a wider range of styles, he also studied at the National Academy of Design and at the Educational Alliance. Admired by critics throughout his long career, Wilson was singled out as a “discovery” by the New York Times art critic Edward Alden Jewel even before his first one-man show at the Galerie Neuf in 1946. His paintings of the ’30s and ’40s were expressionistically rendered, often Biblical parables, filled with what he called “the grief of the intolerable” and reflecting an acute awareness of the agony of the time, from the Holocaust to the Spanish Civil War. A WPA artist who identified strongly with the plight of the Jews in Europe, he relentlessly explored themes of war, torment, and futility in his early decades of painting. When times changed and social pressures subsided, Wilson’s mood lifted. He spent 1952-54 in Paris working at the Academie Julien. During the ’50s his involvement with specific imagery persisted but became more psychological and mythic in orientation. Influenced by Cubism, he created a vocabulary of interlocking shapes and bold, sweeping gestures that served as a transition between his early figurative expressionism and his later abstract constructivist concerns. Towards the end of the decade Wilson reached a crossroads, moving towards abstraction and searching for what he called “a scaffolding under the externals.” By 1960, influenced by the Russian Constructivists, Mondrian, and Abstract Expressionism, Wilson turned to abstraction. Reexamining the basic elements of painting, he evolved his own personal vocabulary and structure, fusing the cerebral and the emotive. He became increasingly experimental, using house paint, sand, and other unorthodox materials in paintings that he worked from all directions, dripping, spraying, stenciling, and collaging. He employed elements of disjunction, repetitions of geometric motifs, linear networks, and complex overlays to create the transparent, multi-layer development of space that characterizes his later paintings. A consummate draftsman, Wilson filled notebook after notebook with drawings that he amplified in his paintings. Eschewing popular movements, Wilson was always one to pursue a personal aesthetic. Diego Barboza - 1945-2003 Hand signed and dated 1988 Oil on Canvas Diego Barboza was born the Carabobo street of Maracaibo, Venezuela on February 4, 1945. He was a Venezuelan Neo Figurative Painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in Venezuelan art history. Diego Barboza opened a new chapter in Latin America, beyond the surreal or the magical realism of the Modern Latin American Masters. He created a new language of dislocation and transgression. Personages became distorted to the point that was very exaggerated forms His figures twisted and contorted without losing their presence or their pull. His first collages, in the sixties, show the influence of American Pop Art. In 1967 he exhibited at the Ateneo de Caracas his series 'Los Ratones', a proposal then 'criticized by critics as unprecedented in Venezuela'. In his tribute to the film "Nosferatu" Friedrich Murnau included 32 drawings as well as two-dimensional objects. In 1968 he moved to London where he studied at the London College of Printing. From that time is his '30 Girls with Nets', an action in which 30 students of the London College of Printing, dressed in black and covered by white nets, toured London public places, behaving naturally. His 'street expressions', which he later called 'poetic actions', symbolized a breakdown of social restraints through unusual behaviors that sought to provoke public reactions. Upon his return to Venezuela in 1973, Barboza continues with this line of work, being recognized as one of the initiators of Venezuelan conceptual art. In the 1980's Diego Barboza turned to painting, the New Venezuelan Figuration. Here belongings and the feminine figure fill the work of that time, in which he embodied his intimacy and daily life through scenes of furnishings and flowers that included objects from his workshop and home. His nudes were made from live model, then to follow the path of distortion resulting in their unmistakable females: a figure that represented their personal way of appreciating beauty. Barboza presented his first individual exhibition at the Centro de Bellas Artes of Maracaibo Venezuela. In 1963, he traveled to London when the Conceptual Art movement started, he had the support of the London New Art Lab Gallery. On March 7, 1970 Barboza displayed his first work on Conceptual Art, which he called Art of Action. In London with the performance of 30 Girls with nets (30 Muchachas con redes). Venezuela, especially Caracas, was a rich field of action for modernism in South America. Venezuelan Geometric Abstraction, Op art and Kinetic Art dominated through crucial figures like Jesús Rafael Soto, Gego, Alejandro Otero, and Carlos Cruz Diez, the country’s kinetic art made a fundamental contribution internationally. The Greater London Arts Association and the Arts Council of Great Britain did several exhibitions of (North, Central, South, London, Wales, Scotland and Ulster) to show the actual Visual Arts in all of the United Kingdom and Diego Barboza was invited for this event with a solo exhibition, expressions around a cylinder (Expresiones alrededor de un cilindro). Diego has made numerous solo and group exhibitions, obtaining rewards since 1963. He is represented in the most important museums of Venezuela, as well as in England, Brazil, Colombia and Cuba. In 1986 he was awarded the Municipal Visual Arts Award of the Municipal Council of the Federal District and in 1997 he received the National Prize for Plastic Arts granted by the National Council of Culture, CONAC. Abstract art has origins in 19th-century Europe, but it came into its own as a significant movement during the 20th century. While they were never formally affiliated with one another, we know them today as Abstract Expressionists.

The male contingent of the Abstract Expressionists, which includes Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Robert Motherwell, is frequently cited in discussing leading figures of this internationally influential postwar art movement. However, the women of Abstract Expressionism, such as Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell and others, were equally involved in the art world of the time. Sexism, family obligations and societal pressures contributed to a long history of their being overlooked, but the female Abstract Expressionists experimented vigorously, developed their own style and produced significant bodies of work.
