About the Item

medium: hand-cut road map The artist says of the inspiration in her latest work . . . Moving to Washington, DC in 2016 changed me. The unraveling of this country's leadership elicited a strong, visceral reaction, and I spent the last year coming into consciousness. The work in this exhibition is a small act and the beginning of my journey to find my voice. Navigating through life as a woman, I have faced a myriad of challenges—most of which I had accepted as the norm and was never courageous enough to protest. I have been harassed on the street by strangers. I have seen my hardworking friends with children openly and honestly struggle to find the necessary support for both work and life balance. I have faced constant judgment for being childless and unmarried in my 30s. I encountered income inequality in the workplace. While these may seem like mild and ordinary obstacles, they are systemic problems. It is easy to feel helpless and wonder what one individual can do. After being silent for a lifetime, I now challenge myself to have a voice. Each small voice builds the resistance and strengthens the sound. Nikki Rosato earned her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2013. Prior to studying at SMFA, She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Pittsburgh. In 2016, Rosato had a solo exhibition, titled Inbound, at Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, including The Seattle Times, The Boston Globe, Canadian Geographic, Art New England Magazine and Hi-Fructose New Contemporary Art Magazine.

"Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood Panel
Located in Soquel, CA
"Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood Panel Dramatic abstract composition by Michele King (American, b. 1962). This piece resembles a nebula, with swirling texture and subtle variations in color. Although the piece appears to be mostly black, there are a variety of colors that peek through the top layer. A layer of high gloss varnish creates a nearly iridescent quality to the piece, and the colors shift subtly depending on the viewing angle. Signed "Michele King" on verso. No frame, but the edges are painted for a frame-less display. Board size: 24"H x 24"W Michele King (American, b. 1962) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to California in the 1990s. She attended Virginia Tech and Harvard, where she earned her MPA. She pursued graduate studies at the Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Her work is focused on “memory, the future, and ways in which perception is shaped through a combination of reality and imagination.” King’s process involves layering of various media, creating depth and texture.
