Currency #222: Orange Painted Coin with Face of a Cuban Woman About Foreignness

2024

About the Item

This artwork by Natasha Lelenco, part of her Currency Exchange series, features a striking orange coin portrait of a Cuban woman, symbolizing themes of foreignness, identity, and migration. Painted in vibrant acrylic tones, the piece combines a contemporary profile portrait with text that reads “Sí, pero ya no soy extranjera” (Yes, but I’m no longer a foreigner), highlighting the journey of belonging and self-acceptance. This unique circular artwork, rendered on a two-centimeter thick wooden panel, reflects the artist’s exploration of the personal and collective experiences tied to migration and the nuanced meaning of foreignness in today’s world. The Currencies series by Natasha Lelenco is designed for versatile display, working either as a standalone contemporary artwork or as part of a modular art installation, allowing collectors to create custom panel compositions that adapt to any space. Each piece is a unique hand-painted wood artwork, reflecting themes of migration, identity, and value. We offer special pricing for multiple acquisitions, and the artist also accepts custom commissions related to this series. For more details, feel free to contact the seller by clicking the "Ask the Seller" button—we respond in less than an hour! Natasha Lelenco, an artist of Moldovan origin, explores themes of foreignness and delves into the well-trodden subject of the value of art with this series. While conventional coins have a fixed value and typically depict a national figure, Natasha's coins showcase anonymous faces and offer variable, often arbitrary, selling values. These coins can function both individually and as panels alongside others from the same series, allowing for the creation of installations as vast as desired. The artist also creates panels on commission according to the preferences of clients. Feel free to get in touch, and we will be delighted to provide further information. As an interesting curiosity, the artist offers her collectors the possibility to exchange the equivalent value of the percentage that would have been due to the artist from the sale of these coins for future works of her own creation. Therefore, beyond acquiring a wonderful piece of art, they acquire the opportunity to visit the artist's studio and consider the purchase of another work using this as a form of payment. Natasha Lelenco says of this project: "This series is about value and price. I propose to the public the acquisition of a currency as a transfer value only valid for future work of my authorship. This moving value, which has nothing to do with determining the value of the work itself (the currency itself), is decided, in addition to being completely arbitrary in nature, except for a reasoned valuation between the price of one currency and another. These currencies transfer the enhanced value of the artistic object for future work, deliberately leaving aside any symbolic overvaluation that derives from the creative work. However, each piece is a unique work elaborated with deliberate technical flaws, signed, and serves as a certification of original work. The norm is that the faces on currencies belong to kings, presidents of republics, or individuals who represent clear national identification. These currencies, by contrast, present a collection of anonymous profiles enveloped in disconcerting phrases that allude to the concept of a vast community of citizens who live in a state of 'not belonging,' characters who inhabit the depreciation that so often defines origins, laws, and inequality."

His work is collected worldwide and is in many important collections including, Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart, Hugh Hefner and Prince Jefri of Brunei to name only a few. In addition to those, his paintings came to popular attention when he was commissioned to create 5 large scale paintings for the lobby of The Palladium Theatre in New York City. "RED POW" Batman & the Movie Star Monoprint with painted iridescent Bat Signal
By Ceravolo
Located in Southampton, NY
Ceravolo's Mono Print with iridescent acrylic hand work is titled "RED POW" with YELLOW burst. based on his "Batman and the Movie Star" original painting on canvas. This canvas measures approx. 28x40" framed. Ceravolo has created several unique monoprints based on his "Batman and the Movie Star" painting all with different "POW" and burst colors. This one is RED POW with a Yellow burst. All of these monoprints have an iridescent painted Bat Signal in the sky hand painted by Ceravolo. One of The Hampton's most popular urban Pop artists Ceravolo's work has been exhibited alongside Warhol and Peter Max for years, his paintings are collected by Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Alice Cooper among others. He has been call the "Rock and Roll Painter" and "Painter of the Stars of Rock" by the media. This Monoprint features Batman driving his Batmobile with a sultry Movie Star sitting next to him while at the same time there is a "Bat Call" signal in the night sky signaling him that there is a need for his help in Gotham City. Along with those two distractions the gopher "G" is standing next to Batman on the side of the Bat Mobile. While this is all going on Batman is thinking...."I must concentrate on driving" Maybe this is a typical night for Batman in Gotham City. We have included in this listing an image of Ceravolo with some of his famous collectors. His paintings can be found in many influential corporate and private collections, including: ELTON JOHN, ROD STEWART, HUGH M. HEFNER, DAVID BRENNER, MONIQUE VAN VOOREN, WARNER BROS., RCA RECORDS AND SCHENLEY INDUSTRIES to name a few. Ceravolo's art came to popular attention when he was commissioned to create five large scale paintings for the lobby of The Palladium Theatre in New York City of Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Frank Zappa, Neil Young and Hall and Oates.
