About the Item
The central theme of the artwork revolves around the concept of love, partnership, and the strength that comes from sharing life's journey with someone you truly cherish. The portrayal of a woman standing behind a man is symbolic and highlights the significance of being someone's backbone, providing much-needed support and encouragement in every situation.
The title, "My Backbone and I," aptly captures the essence of the artwork. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of the couple, where each person complements and supports the other, forming an unbreakable bond. This piece reminds us that true love involves more than just being there during the good times; it means standing together, hand-in-hand, through life's challenges and triumphs.
In the context of the artwork, the woman's presence behind the man represents her role as a steadfast pillar of strength, constantly supporting and empowering him. This representation challenges traditional gender norms, debunking the outdated notion that women should always stand behind men. Instead, it celebrates the idea that a successful partnership is built on mutual respect, equal footing, and shared responsibilities.
The artist, Michael Adetula, masterfully conveys the emotion of love through his use of colors, forms, and the positioning of the figures. The warm, vibrant hues evoke a sense of passion and intensity, signifying the depth of the couple's affection for each other. The woman's confident stance and the man's relaxed posture demonstrate their comfort and trust in each other, emphasizing the bond that holds them together.
Through "My Backbone and I," Adetula encourages us to reflect on the importance of building loving and supportive relationships. It serves as a gentle reminder that when couples face challenges together, they become a stronger unit. Love becomes a force that binds them, and their individual problems become shared burdens, lightened through unity.
Moreover, the artwork carries a broader message about the significance of nurturing love and harmony within the home. As the saying goes, "Home is where the heart is," and if every home is built on love, understanding, and mutual support, it becomes a sanctuary of peace and tranquility. The positive ripple effects of such harmonious homes extend to the larger society, contributing to a more compassionate and empathetic world.
"My Backbone and I" by Michael Adetula is not just an exquisite piece of art, but also a powerful testament to the strength of love and the transformative potential of a supportive partnership. The artwork beautifully captures the essence of "behind every successful man, there is always a woman who is ready to be his backbone in every situation." It urges us to celebrate love's remarkable ability to empower and inspire and to recognize that love, when shared with the right person, makes life's journey all the more meaningful and fulfilling. Let us take inspiration from this powerful piece and strive to build a society that cherishes and cultivates love in all its forms.

About Artist
Michael Adetula's paintings convey his fascination for contemporary attitudes which are embellished with fragments of history. Working with images of trendy young people in poses that suggest the hipness of modernity, his characters have on their bodies paintings and designs of elements that tell stories that stretch beyond their present, to the past, or even their genetic memories. Adetula’s work addresses cultural themes of identity, with the aim of documenting how the past reflects on the present. “The time capsules we live in are interconnected in more ways than we can grasp, says Adetula.
His primary medium is Acrylic on canvas, which is complimented by his application of colored pens. With this, he is able to create works that have bold brush strokes as well as intricate paintings on the body that also serve as texture. The backgrounds and paintings of clothes worn by his subjects are similar in rendition, while the details on the bodies of his subjects are painted with a mixture of both mediums.
There is an application of the philosophy of natural synthesis whereby outside influences, concepts, and ideas come together in Adetula’s compositions. Colors, symbols, tones, and shades unite in the intricate paintings on the body, which include images of trees, cowries, traditional African combs, and flowers. His depictions symbolize tradition, life, belief systems, emotions, and transitions. Creativity for him, “is a powerful tool for exploring deeply, the cultural heritage of the people. His inklings are carefully arranged to reflect the impact of this ideology in the fullness of
time. This is clearly evident in his works such as "A Lady with the Swag" and "The way we are."
Inspired by a fertile imagination, Adetula ’s evocative paintings simultaneously address contemporary cultural life by adding tinges of the past. This vision helps him grasp the clear essence and meaning of his subjects and themes, and by so doing makes clear his message of giving life to his art, and giving his artful messages to society.
