About the Item
Linda Kamille Schmidt is inspired by the colors and textures of transparent and opaque fabrics that she collects and sews into layered, geometric collages. The construction of each piece is a journey. Through her stitching methods and varying degrees of fussiness, she explores and challenges expectations of perfection, the rigidity of traditional rules, and what has historically denoted success for women. Everyone has a relationship with fabric, so the colors, textures and types of fabric used in the work stir up personal memories of childhood, special events, personalities, life styles, ethics, privilege and wealth. Her fabrics range in cost and quality from thrift store finds and bargain bin remnants to high end silks. The stitching is done both by machine and by hand, sometimes neat, sometimes unpredictable and haphazard. The fabrics are often frayed, ripped apart and reassembled, leaving holes that expose a trail of her process.
There is an architectural element to Schmidt’s work; she builds each piece forward from the past. The bright colors are constructive and positive. The transparent and opaque layers overlap, causing the colors to glow from underneath. The two-sided hanging work invites the viewer to look for the places where they can see into the distance. Opaque fabrics create a visual block but the color and texture can change if something transparent is layered on top.
Schmidt is originally from Kansas where she attended Bethel College and where most of her family still lives. She received an MA and MFA in drawing and painting from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. She has lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY, since 1989.

Linda Kamille Schmidt plays with emotional connections and memory in her smaller, framed works. In their encasements, each collage appears as a portal; a well of both excitement and sentimentality. Her transparent and opaque fabrics mingle together with an almost casual ease. Schmidt’s hand is evident in the cut, placement, and suturing of each strip. The artist vacillates between precise machine and loose, wobbly hand-sewn stitches. Her subtle use of pins in the works act as focal points for the eye as it dances around the celebration of color and texture. As a result, her works refuse the sterility of manufacturing, and challenge the reductive elision of perfectionism and femininity. This sense of touch evokes a closeness with the fabric, almost inviting contact. A hot frenzy of geometric forms, Schmidt’s fabric swatches about and overlap to form a kaleidoscopic play with depth and recession. Coupled with the scale of these smaller pieces, Schmidt draws her viewer forward, and entices them to fall into her mesmerizing displays.
