About the Item
Francisco Moncion's Pastel on Paper "Bourrée Fantasque #12 Blue" a Mid-20th Century fantasy image inspired by George Balanchine's 1949 ballet for the New York City Ballet. Moncion was a principal dancer with the NYCB and a respected artist who worked with and befriended Salvador Dali, Miro, Picasso, and Corrado Cagli and photographers George Platt Lynes and Carl van Vechen. There are 14 unique and highly creative works in the "Bourrée Fantasque" series each 17 x 14 inches executed in rich pastel with bold pencil lines on paper. Some images suggest dancing figures, others vibrant costumes. All have a statement of linear presence and are rooted in the Mid-20th Century esthetic.
Each work is mounted in a soft pastel beveled mat selected by the artist to complement the individual piece and framed in a 1 inch contemporary satin black metal frame with acrylic ready for hanging. The total framed size in 25 inches wide by 22 inches high.
Moncion was known for his vibrant color palate often highlighting brilliant orange and yellows against subtle blues and apricot drawing dynamics from his Dominican-Latino-American heritage.
Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel in "Orpheus", Death in "La Valse", Prince Ivan in "Firebird", and the Boy in "Afternoon of a Faun". He was also a successful choreographer and was also frequently photographed by George Platt Lynes and Carl van Vechten. Moncion's paintings and works on paper were exhibited throughout his career in New York City and in Woodstock, NY. He had an 18th Century stone house in an area known as the Vly near Woodstock from 1950 until his death in 1995.
