About the Item
This mixed media mandala by Donna Sharrett is composed of guitar string ball-ends, clothing, needlework, jewelry, and thread, and is framed in a square 10 x 10 inch light natural wood float frame (5 x 5 inches unframed).
Rhinestone studded beads and a ball link chain surround a carved ivory colored, flower shaped bead atop a white fabric at the center, encircled by a pale pink fabric with pink stitching and pearl beads. A pink and magenta fabric lined with tiny pale pink beads is stitched into strips around the edge of the mandala with little ivory, metal and pearl beads on the tips of the points.
As Sharrett's statement asserts, "I have become a custodian of memories; my works, repositories for keepsakes.
Handmade doll’s clothes, jewelry, buttons; worn bedspreads, clothing, tablecloths & napkins – were given to me by those who wished to have their personal treasures included in my work. Yard sales & consignment shops yielded evocative objects now out of fashion or in disrepair. These gifts & discoveries join the repertoire of symbolically significant materials which have informed my work – rose petals, dirt & hair.
Guitar-strings are used as a dedication to my brother Scot Sharrett, as are the song titles chosen to name the works. A variety of needlework techniques are used, including crochet, embroidery and needle lace."
