About the Item
Non-objective artist Aimée Farnet Siegel works with color and line through the medium of hand-painted and manipulated paper. Her works inhabit space outside the two-dimensional plane of paint on canvas and have a depth beyond collage and are closer in nature to assemblage.
Treating refined pulp much as a ceramicist would clay or a designer would bolts of fabric, Siegel renders, rents, and reassembles the tactile medium in creating two- and three-dimensional works. Working with 16-foot rolls of paper and miscellaneous fragments and glue, the results range from asymmetrical hangings to sculptural, free-standing figures.
Born in New Orleans in 1963, Siegel received her BFA from Louisiana State University and later studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. She developed a career as a graphic designer and incorporated as Aimée Farnet Design Group in 1985.
Siegel began creating art in 2005. She has shown at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the New Orleans Art Center. She has since exhibited in solo shows at Barristers Gallery, New Orleans, and in group exhibitions with Blue Spiral Gallery, Asheville, NC and, in New Orleans at Second Story Gallery and Degas Gallery. Currently on view at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans is Siegel’s site-specific installation, entitled Principle of Uncertainty, in conversation with works in the international group show, Hinge Pictures: Eight Women Artists Occupy the Third Dimension.
Siegel teaches at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and is an independent curator. She has two grown children and works and lives in New Orleans with her husband.

Aimée Farnet Siegel
Aimée Farnet Siegel is a native New Orleanian who received her BFA from Louisiana State University. Connections and the space between are the primary themes in her work. She explores the tension that is created when objects are close, but do not touch. Using paper as her medium, she strives to be sensitive to its authenticity, allowing the paper to become what it wants to be. With paper, she is able to improvise & work with fluidity, inviting chance into each piece. Aimée recently completed a solo presentation and site specific installation for The Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Alongside working in her studio in New Orleans, Aimee teaches a class she created in abstract collage at The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts.

"Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood Panel
Dramatic abstract composition by Michele King (American, b. 1962). This piece resembles a nebula, with swirling texture and subtle variations in color. Although the piece appears to be mostly black, there are a variety of colors that peek through the top layer. A layer of high gloss varnish creates a nearly iridescent quality to the piece, and the colors shift subtly depending on the viewing angle.
Signed "Michele King" on verso.
No frame, but the edges are painted for a frame-less display.
Board size: 24"H x 24"W
Michele King (American, b. 1962) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to California in the 1990s. She attended Virginia Tech and Harvard, where she earned her MPA. She pursued graduate studies at the Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Her work is focused on “memory, the future, and ways in which perception is shaped through a combination of reality and imagination.” King’s process involves layering of various media, creating depth and texture.
