About the Item
"White Eggplant on Red Table" is a color pencil drawing on paper by artist Emilio Sanchez. The drawing is to the paper edge and initialed "ES" in the lower right. There is an Emilio Foundation stamp on the verso.
Emilio Sanchez returned to the urban skyline time and again. His passion for the ever-changing sky took hold during the 1980's working the ruled lines of the skyscraper in just enough to keep the grandness of both nature and man-made creations.
EMILIO SANCHEZ (1921-1999) was born in Camaguey, Cuba, in 1921. His evolution as an artist began with his childhood experiences of the Caribbean landscape and his decision at an early age to become an artist. Subsequent moves to the United States and Mexico in his youth continued to provide fertile ground for his creative and intellectual development. As a young man Sanchez attended Yale University briefly and the University of Virginia (1939-1943), but he began his formal artistic training in 1944 at the Art Students League in New York City. With solo shows in New York in 1949 and 1951, in Mexico City in 1951, and acquisitions of his artwork to the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the 1960’s, Sanchez was quickly on his way to establishing his 50-year career as a professional visual artist working in oils, watercolors, pencil and ink drawings, and printmaking.
An artist with an independent voice and international acclaim, Sanchez had over sixty solo exhibitions and has been included in numerous group shows in museums and galleries in the United States, Latin America, and Europe.
The work of Emilio Sanchez is well represented in both private and public collections including; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museo de Arte Moderno, Bogotá, Colombia; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX; and Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, PA.

Emilio Sanchez
Emilio Sanchez was born in Camagüey, Cuba in 1921. He began his artistic training at the Art Students League in 1944 when he moved to New York City where he lived until he died in 1999. However, it was in Cuba that he became fascinated with the play of light and shadow on colored forms that became a dominant characteristic of his works. His early works of the 1950s are stylized and figurative depicting themes such as portraits of friends and models, views of New York and tropical landscapes. In the 1960s his works became significantly more abstract, though always maintaining a strong sense of naturalism. It is during this decade that his work matured into an individual vision and when he began to develop his well-known paintings of houses and architectural themes. These architectural works stand out for their simplified forms where all superfluous details are eliminated. Stripped down to their essence these structures acquire universal meaning. Here he captured the effect of light on color making it vibrant. Despite the fact that his buildings are often devoid of visible inhabitants, they hold a strong living presence of their own. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he further explored architectural themes by traveling to countries around the Mediterranean. For example in Morocco he was impressed by the stark white vernacular buildings. He also produced streamlined geometric views of New York skyscrapers. These architectural works probably come closest to the works of Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe and Charles Sheeler in their abstracted stillness of the built environment. In addition to the architectural works Sanchez explored a variety of themes selected for their strong compositional value such as still lifes of fruits and flowers, sailboats, clotheslines and sunsets over the Hudson River. Different from his linear renderings of buildings these other works demonstrate his versatility in painting looser amorphous forms. In the 1990s Sanchez's attention focused more on New York urban scenes of storefronts, garages and skyscrapers. An artist with an independent voice and international acclaim, Sanchez has had over sixty solo exhibitions and has been included in numerous group shows in museums and galleries in the United States, Latin America and Europe. His art is well represented in private and public collections including over thirty museums like the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has also received prestigious awards as first prize at the 1974 Biennial in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Trompe l'oeil [untitled]. Homage.... Ink drawing, multimedia, 1837. Paper size 13.13 x 16.44" (33.3 x 41.8 cm). On watermarked paper "Blauw and Briel." Overall good condition. Small tears and the occasional bit of paper missing at the paper edge. Original color. Center paper crease - as issued. We believe the artist created this artwork on a sheet of paper that had been previously bound in a book.
Dutch trompe l'oeil drawing with pen & ink, pencil, sepia, and black chalk, wax seal, and painted pigment. This montage of early 19th century ephemera depicts sheet music, scenic views, a sealed letter, cards, a portrait of an unknown sitter, and a penned sheet noting ... van S. G. Wezel Wassenaar, October 1837. Is this a homage to the individual portrayed, a metaphorical self-portrait, or just a random assortment of ephemera beautifully composed? The artist keeps us wondering and visually appeased by a striking harmony created through contrast. This piece starts with sheet music entitled; Romance Larghetto No 2. There is a Psalm and Op Jezus Geboorte (On Jesus Birth...
