Published in the 1914 U.S. Naval Academy yearbook, "The Lucky Bag," Vol. XXI (Philadelphia: Wm. H. Hoskins Company, 1914, page 13). While it contains some hand work by Christy, it was reworked by printer at the time of publication.

Howard Chandler Christy
Howard Chandler Christy was born in 1873 in Ohio, showed love for art at age three. Encouraged by his parents, he began with sketching and later turned to watercolors. In 1890, he left for New York to pursue his passion. Christy found a mentor in a famous painter, William Merritt Chase. He admired illustrators Howard Pyle and Edwin Austin Abbey and became a magazine illustrator. His creations included likenesses of women who would become known as "Christy Girls," similar to the famous "Gibson Girls." Married twice, his first daughter Natalie was born during his marriage to model Maybelle Thompson. His second marriage was in 1919 to Nancy Palmer. He retired from magazine illustrating in 1921. His partner until his death at age 80 was Elise Ford. They had a daughter named Holly, born in 1939. He took up professional portraiture and painted portraits for the elite including President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Mr. and Mrs. Hearst and Herbert Hoover. Renowned paintings include We The People in 1937, The Signing Of The Constitution in 1940 and The Signing of The United Nations Charter in 1946–47. Christy had several works in progress when he passed away at his artist studio in 1952 at age 80. They were a portrait of Douglas Mac Arthur and a Gettysburg painting. Among Christy's honors were an honorary membership in the U.S. Naval Academy, medals from Paris and Chicago Expos and decorations from the N.Y Police Force and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Christy's magazine illustrations are collector's items.

A native of Rome, Carlo Mariani first studied there at the Academy of Fine Arts where he was influenced by the prevailing styles of Hyper-Realism and Conceptualism. In 1994, he moved to New York City where he began to paint figural landscapes in a traditional, neo-classical style. The 1990s brought Mariani wide recognition and numerous honors, as he represented Italy three times at the Venice Biennale. Additionally, in 1998, he received the prestigious Antonio Feltrinelli Award for lifetime achievement in painting.
Mariani continues to be best known for his refined and painterly, Renaissance technique. He was a central figure in Rome’s avant-garde in the 1970s and is widely regarded as an influential forerunner of 1980's Postmodernism. Charles James Turrell was one of the most talented miniaturists of his age. Born in London, he studied under a Mr. Sargeant, perhaps Frederick Sargeant who exhibited at the Royal Academy, before visiting the United States in 1867 where he painted miniatures at the studio of photographer Napoleon Sarony. During this time, Turrell had distinguished sitters including members of the Vanderbilt, Whitney, and Morgan families. While in America, Turrell married and would go on to maintain successful careers in both New York and London where, in 1869, he opened a studio on Bond Street.
Turrell exhibited widely and with success including annually at the Royal Academy (1873-1904), the Society of Miniaturists (1873 – 1932), the Brooklyn Art Association (1868), the Pennsylvania Academy of Art (1901) and at the Paris Salons. His sitters included Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and Queen Alexandra, when she was Princess of Wales (1884). In 1890, he was appointed official miniature painter to Queen Victoria. Turrell's work is held in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace as well as in the permanent collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, London's Victoria & Albert Museum and the Mount Vernon Collection in Washington D.C., among others.
