Rudolf Johann Weiss (Swiss, * 3.9.1846 Basel; † 17.4.1933 Biel/Bienne, Switzerland) Ancient Gateway of Ptolemy III by Thebes in Egypt • 19th century water colour on paper, visible image ca. 19 x 29 cm • Vintage frame, ca. 28 x 37 cm (Later) • The water colour is in exceptionally fine condition, with bright colours and no damages Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Rudolf J. Weiss was born in Basel, Switzerland, but at an early age moved and lived in Biel/Bienne, where the talented artist worked as theater set designer mainly at the municipal theater of Biel/Bienne, but also took part in theatrical productions further afield. In between he painted interesting landscapes, portraits, historical scenes and which he would sell successfully to collectors, as well as institutions. Rudolf J. Weiss traveled throughout Europe and famously visited the Middle East during the 19th century, creating plein air water colour studies, on which he would then base his his highly prized photo-realist paintings of oriental daily life and landscapes. Weiss finally settled in in the lake shore city of Biel/Bienne in Switzerland, from where he worked as a resident artist in the theaters of Biel/Bienne and Basel creating magnificent stage sets. He also worked freelance accepting commissions and was well known for his highly skilled depictions of historically accurate scenes. The small plein air water colour on offer today depicts a picturesque scene by the ancient Gateway of Ptolemy III near Thebes in Egypt, as young Weiss would have encountered and captured in the moment on one of his many excursions, during his trips to Egypt.
