ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Australia, Hayley Lever arrived in England at the turn of the century. He worked and studied for a few years before settling in the Cornwall village of St. Ives, a picturesque fishing port in southern England. He became an essential member of the artist's colony and produced an extensive body of work, predominantly fishing vessels, marines, seascapes, and port scenes. A prolific artist, he submitted his work to competitions in England, France, and America, receiving several prestigious awards. He also traveled to various countries in Europe, sketching wherever he went. Many of his most compelling works were done in the south of England and the port villages of Douarnenez and Concarneau in Brittany, directly across the English Channel from St. Ives. American artists occasionally visited St. Ives, and Lever befriended Ernest Lawson, who greatly admired his work. Lawson persuaded Lever to emigrate to America, and he arrived in New York in 1912 with his family. Lever soon discovered the New England coast, where he began to paint the fishing fleets of Gloucester and the coastal scenes of Marblehead, producing works that became popular in the New York art market. Major galleries such as William Macbeth, Ferargil, and Daniel and Rehn gave him exhibitions. He continued to gather awards, including a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, in 1915. The National Arts Club honored him with a life membership, and he was elected as a member of the National Academy of Design. From 1919 until 1931, Lever taught life classes and still life painting at The Art Students League of New York. He also maintained a summer studio in Gloucester in the 1920s, from which he traveled to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and the Canadian maritime provinces, producing many spectacular marine paintings and watercolors. Lever's works are in numerous museum collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia, including the Brooklyn Museum, Detroit Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, The Phillips Collection (Washington, DC), The Royal Cornwall Museum (England), Smithsonian American Art Museum, and The Art Gallery NSW (Sydney, Australia).

Albert Lorey Groll, 'Storm Clouds (Arizona)', graphite on paper, c. 1914. Signed in pencil, in the image, lower left. A fine spontaneous rendering on heavy buff, wove paper, with margins (1 1/2 to 2 inches); slight toning at the sheet edges, in good condition. With a pen and ink landscape drawing, verso. Image size 7 5/8 x 10 inches; sheet size 10 3/4 x 13 5/8 inches. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Provenance: Ex. collection Kennedy Galleries, New York. ABOUT THE ARTIST Albert Lorey Groll (1866-1910) was born in New York in 1866, the son of a pharmacist immigrant from Darmstadt, Germany. During his early years, he traveled to Europe to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Nicholas Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz. He further pursued his studies in London and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. Groll returned to New York in 1895 and moved from figure to landscape painting while expanding his interests to printmaking. In 1904 Groll made the first of several trips to the American Southwest, traveling to Arizona with ethnographer Stewart Culin of the Brooklyn Museum. Later he went to New Mexico with his friend, the artist and illustrator William Robinson Leigh (see our 1stDibs listing no. LU53239015112 ). He focused on impressionistic scenes of Native American lands. The Laguna Pueblo people admired Groll's paintings, honoring him with the name "Chief Bald Head Eagle Eye." Groll kept a studio in the Gainsborough Studios in Manhattan and won several awards for his work in Arizona and New York, including the Salmagundi Club Shaw Prize in 1904 and a gold medal at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1906. He was also awarded the George Inness gold medal from the National Academy of Design in 1912 for his painting of Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. Canyon Country
By Lu Haskew

Canyon Country by Lu Haskew Pastel 16x20" image size Landscape view of the Grand Canyon ABOUT THE ARTIST: Lu Haskew 1921-2009 "Life is good to me. Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons." Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career. Since 1992, she has studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike, and others at the Scottsdale Art...
