About the Artist:
George Elbert Burr, an American artist, was born in 1859 in Monroe Falls, Ohio. His early interest in art led him to create his first etchings using zinc scraps from his father's store. He later attended the Art Institute of Chicago, although his formal training was brief. Burr spent most of his career working as an illustrator for prestigious publications like Scribner’s, Harper’s, and The Observer.
In the late 19th century, Burr traveled extensively, creating artwork that captured the essence of nature. His travels to Europe from 1896 to 1901 influenced his style, blending old-world techniques with new approaches to landscape and still-life subjects.
By 1906, Burr moved to Denver, Colorado, to improve his health, where he began to focus on capturing the grandeur of the desert landscape. His iconic Desert Set and etchings of Southwestern scenes, including Arizona, became some of his most renowned works. Burr continued his artistic endeavors throughout his life, producing over 25,000 etchings, as well as numerous watercolors, oils, and drawings, many of which are held in prestigious collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Burr’s distinctive process—combining etching, aquatint, and hand-painting on copper plates—resulted in unique and highly valued prints, with each one varying in mood and execution.

George Elbert Burr
George Elbert Burr was an American printmaker and painter best known for his etchings and drypoints of the desert and mountain regions of the American West. He enjoyed success early, providing illustrations for Harper's, Scribner's Magazine, Frank Leslie's Weekly, and The Cosmopolitan. In 1892, he began a four-year project illustrating a catalog of Heber R. Bishop's collection of jade antiquities for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This project, producing etchings of over a thousand artifacts, paid well enough for Burr to embark on an extended tour of Europe upon its completion with his wife. Over the next five years, as they traveled in Italy, Germany, and the British Isles, Burr amassed sketches and watercolors that would provide the source material for his copper plate etchings of European scenes. In 1924, the Burrs settled in Phoenix, Arizona, where he would remain for the rest of his life. The change of scenery allowed him to round out his oeuvre of Western landscapes with expansive views of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts. He and his wife, who died in 1941, are buried in Cameron. Today, George Elbert Burr is widely considered to be one of the finest of the early 20th-century American etchers. His prints are in several prominent collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the British Museum, the French National Print Collection, Luxembourg Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Northern Arizona and the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Albert Lorey Groll (1866-1910) was born in New York in 1866, the son of a pharmacist immigrant from Darmstadt, Germany. During his early years, he traveled to Europe to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Nicholas Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz. He further pursued his studies in London and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. Groll returned to New York in 1895 and moved from figure to landscape painting while expanding his interests to printmaking.
In 1904 Groll made the first of several trips to the American Southwest, traveling to Arizona with ethnographer Stewart Culin of the Brooklyn Museum. Later he went to New Mexico with his friend, the artist and illustrator William Robinson Leigh (see our 1stDibs listing no. LU53239015112 ). He focused on impressionistic scenes of Native American lands. The Laguna Pueblo people admired Groll's paintings, honoring him with the name "Chief Bald Head Eagle Eye."
Groll kept a studio in the Gainsborough Studios in Manhattan and won several awards for his work in Arizona and New York, including the Salmagundi Club Shaw Prize in 1904 and a gold medal at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1906. He was also awarded the George Inness gold medal from the National Academy of Design in 1912 for his painting of Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies.

A master marine painter, Yelland painted in Gloucester Harbor. He sailed to San Francisco in 1874 to take a teaching position in art at Mills College in Oakland. Full Bio:
Raymond Dabb Yelland was born in London, England on February 2, 1848. At the age of three, he immigrated with his family to New York City where he was raised and attended public schools. By the age of twelve, he had settled on art as a career.
He was born as Raymond Dabb, but due to the negative connotation of his name, his mother's maiden name, Yelland, was added. After serving under Sheridan in the Federal Army during the Civil War, Yelland attended Pennington Seminary in New Jersey. He studied art at the National Academy of Design from 1869 to 1871 with Page and Brevoort, and then taught at the Academy for one year.
With his new bride, he sailed around the Horn in 1874 to San Francisco where he would assume the position of an art instructor at Mills College in Oakland. In 1877, he traveled to England, and later continued his studies in Paris with Luc Oliver Merson. Upon his return to California, Yelland became assistant director of the San Francisco School of Design, and in 1888, assumed its directorship.
