Florence Vincent Robinson, American (1874-1937), Garden with Fountain.
Born in the Boston area in 1874, Florence Robinson was known for her vibrant watercolors depicting people, landscapes, and cities. The artist settled in Paris around 1890 and studied with Pierre Vignal, Henri Harpignies, Dagnan Bouveret, and James Abbott McNeil Whistler. Her works were well received, with critics praising her technique, especially the use of light. During her life, Robinson exhibited extensively in many notable galleries, museums, and art societies including the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Paris Salon, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Royal Academy London. Her works are included in many institutional permanent collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard, and the Baltimore Museum of Fine Arts.
An independent spirit, Robinson traveled extensively throughout New England, Europe, and Northern Africa, her watercolors providing a pictorial travelogue of her journeys. Beautiful land and cityscapes of Spain, Algiers, the Netherlands, and Belgium are all represented in the artist's oeuvre, but it was to France and Italy that Robinson returned most frequently to work.

This watercolor by Charles Demetropoulos depicts a classical French Academic-style building which was designed in 1862 by architect William G. Preston as the new home of the Boston Society for Natural History, which had been founded in 1830. In the 1860’s, many of Boston’s cultural institutions relocated here to the Back Bay, the elegant residential district being built on the tidal marshes behind the city. When the museum moved here in 1863, the new building dominated the western edge of the landfill.
