About the Item
Antoine-Baptiste PETIT
Paris, 1800 – Versailles, 1864
Watercolor
18 x 27 cm
Antoine-Baptiste Petit was a decorative painter and teacher of perspective.
He produced views of Paris in the 1830s before painting landscapes of Normandy, Picardy and Brittany in the 1840s and views of Egypt in the 1850s.
This nice watercolor represents Paris in the 1830s/1840s. This is a view of architectures located at the corner of Rue Saint Denis and Passage Basfour in the second arrondissement, as indicated in the drawing. You can also see the different commercial names. The neighborhood has changed a lot since then. The most diverse professions coexisted at the time: trimmings shop, butcher, dental surgeon...
A description of this place in Paris was written in "History of Paris street by street, house by house", published in 1875. The following notice was written in 1857.
“The Basfour passage is located between rue Saint-Denis and the new rue de Palestro; but the top has disappeared since 1857. The passage has miraculously survived Boulevard Sébastopol ! The origin of the name: the street led to the ovens of the Plasterer of the Green Cross, which later became the cemetery of the Trinity Hospital. (…) Our fathers only knew of a dead end called Basfour, included in the king's census, and in 1714 this alley without a leader had only one house and one lantern. The house is No. 4; In the den of a coal burner there was an ancient chapel of the Trinity, where mass was said before the performances given in this convent by the confreres of the Passion; the local occupation had ceased to be monastic without taking away any of its property rights from the Trinity Hospital. The Vieilles-Étuves house also overlooked the cul-de-sac, but from behind, and the main entrance was rue Saint-Denis. »

This early 19th-century watercolour by British artist Paul Sandby Munn RWS (1773-1845) depicts a riverside view at Mallevy in North Wales.
Amid a hasty world where technology consumes our waking hours, few of us find the time to consider the subtle beauties of quiet watercolours. Yet, during the late 18th century, when Munn began producing his skillfully-rendered views, this style of drawing was considered an act of rebellion. Indeed, to such an extent that, together with several associates, Munn contributed to one of the most vital artistic circles in British history - the “Brothers” sketching club.
Held every Saturday, the sketching club sought to raise the status of landscape watercolours from their lowly position as mere copies of nature. Fellow artists such as John Varley, Thomas Girtin and John Sell Cotman...

David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism.
He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour.
Although most popularly known for his works in watercolour, he also painted over 300 works in oil towards the end of his career, now considered "one of the greatest, but least recognised, achievements of any British painter.
His son, known as David Cox the Younger (1809-1885), was also a successful artist.
Early life in Birmingham, 1783–1804
Cox's birthplace in Deritend, Birmingham, illustrated by Samuel Lines
Cox was born on 29 April 1783 on Heath Mill Lane in Deritend, then an industrial suburb of Birmingham. His father was a blacksmith and whitesmith about whom little is known, except that he supplied components such as bayonets and barrels to the Birmingham gun trade. Cox's mother was the daughter of a farmer and miller from Small Heath to the east of Birmingham. Early biographers record that "she had had a better education than his father, and was a woman of superior intelligence and force of character." Cox was initially expected to follow his father into the metal trade and take over his forge, but his lack of physical strength led his family to seek opportunities for him to develop his interest in art, which is said to have first become apparent when the young Cox started painting paper kites...
