Jane Gray (b.1931) Stained Glass Design Watercolour 28 x 27 cm Signed, dated and studio stamp verso Provenance: the artist's studio sale St Oswald’s Church in Oswestry, Shropshire has been a place of worship for nearly 1000 years and commands a prominent position in the Town Centre. The church has a rich history, with William Morgan, who famously translated the whole Bible into Welsh, appointed Vicar of Oswestry in 1599, and the renowned Victorian architect G E Street substantially renovating the church between 1872-74. The church and town receive their names from Saint Oswald, the Christian King of Northumbria, who was killed at the Battle of Maserfield in 642 AD by the pagan King of Mercia, a mere 400 metres from the site of the present church. One of Oswald’s severed arms was allegedly snatched by a raven and dropped “a bowshot” away, causing a well to spring up that would be visited for centuries for healing and still exists today. The present-day name of Oswestry is a corruption of the original name Oswald’s Tree, which derives from Oswald's body being nailed to a tree in mock crucifixion. In Gray’s design, a large O fills the central four windows, a continuum (symbolising eternity) depicted at its centre, and a tree branching out across the central lights. Within them are also small roundels representing groups connected with Oswestry, including: Cambrian Railways, Round Table, Royal British Legion, Shropshire County Council, Oswestry Town Council, Rotary International, Lions International, Women’s Royal Voluntary Service, Orthopaedic Hospital, Royal Artillery, and Oswestry Borough Council. This window was installed and dedicated in 2004. Jane Gray A.R.C.A. (b.1931) is a British stained glass artist. She studied stained glass at the Kingston School of Arts (1949-51) and later at the Royal College of Art (1951-55) under Lawrence Lee. Lee was so impressed with Gray’s work that he asked her to work alongside him on the design of ten nave windows for Coventry Cathedral. This six-year-long design project culminated in their final installation in 1962 after the cathedral’s consecration. Gray was the first woman to become a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and has designed more than a hundred windows in private and public buildings, chapels and over forty churches across the country, including St Peter’s, Martindale, Shrewsbury Abbey, St Oswald, Oswestry and St Mary, Chirk. Gray’s designs mark a crucial turning point in the history of stained glass art as the Victorian style gave way to a modern, aesthetic. In her work, Gray navigates this shift with a style that, whilst distinctly modern, retains a deep rooted sense of the medieval. Despite many of her commissions being for church windows, stained glass design was not simply about religious depiction for Gray, but more about ‘colour, shapes, luminosity, [and] playing with rainbows’.

Reader, oversize drawing of young woman reading, minimal color
By Audrey Anastasi
Located in Brooklyn, NY
This work was intentionally torn and mended. It predates the artist's full immersion, years later into torn and re-pasted collages, using ripped previous drawings and paper-based materials from media. These recently discovered 1984 oversize drawings on archival papers were created working quickly, from a live model. The series shows the last existing observational drawings prior to the artist's switch to working with her non- dominant left hand. As a feminist, Anastasi's main focus is presenting other women. Unlike the often objectified male gaze...
