Xavier Rendeley
Persephone, 19th Century Classical French Academy Drawing, Chalk and Pencil.

1883

About the Item

19th Century French Academy drawing of a classical maiden, signed Xavier Rendeley bottom right, numbered and dated 2nd April 1883. Presented in fine black and gilt wood frame. Very fine pencil and chalk drawing showing a mastery of hand and an understanding of light and shade. French Academy Drawings are artwork produced in 19th-century France that reflects the teachings of the École des Beaux-Arts, the Parisian state-sponsored art academy. Prioritizing drafts-manship over painting, the school taught students to employ fine line work and soft, blended shading in their drawings. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s drawings, such as his portrait of Mrs. Charles Badham, epitomize the Academic style, which is characterized by close attention to detail, near-invisible brushstrokes, and an emphasis on realistic modelling and shading. Academic painters often depicted scenes from history, literature, the Bible, or classical mythology, although this style can also be seen in pastoral scenes, such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s Gardeuse de Moutons (The Shepherdess), and in Orientalist imagery, such as Jean-Léon Gérôme’s painting The Snake Charmer. Many of the French Impressionist painters were trained in the Academic style, though they later rejected it in favour of their trademark loose, expressive brushwork and scenes of modern life.

Located in Cotignac, FR
French, Mid Century, pastel and crayon portrait of an elegant young lady by Gourdon. Signed and dated bottom left. Trade label to the back board. Presented in period deep 'tray' frame. This seems to be an early work by the artist and hence it carries his name rather than his later more distinctive signature 'Aslan'. Alain Gordon was one of two brothers, his sibling Michel also went on to achieve notable success with his distinctive 'comic' style. Alain Gourdon...

French Impressionist Portrait Drawing, 'The Art Lesson'
Located in Cotignac, FR
Pencil study portrait drawing of a child painting at an easel by French artist Charles-Jean Agard. The work is signed bottom left and presented in a carved wood and gilt frame with mount under glass. A very charming pencil study of a child sitting at an easel. Agard has beautifully captured the head and face in full, with the light and shade, the rest of the body and surroundings are in sketch form, the contrast between the two making for a very successful composition beautifully capturing the intensity of the sitter. Charles Agard...

Portrait of Fingal / Finn MacCool - A moving portrait of an Irish literary hero
Located in Middletown, NY
Black chalk and graphite on light weight cream wove paper, 16 1/8 x 11 1/4 inches, (410 x 286 mm), the full sheet. Signed, titled, and dated in sepia ink in the lower-center sheet area. With horizontal folds approximately 1-inch from the sheet edge at each of the four sheets. The drawing appears to have been folded at the sheet edges to fit into a frame. Finn mac Cumail (or mac Umaill), often anglicized Finn McCool or MacCool, is a hero in Irish mythology, as well as in later Scottish and Manx folklore. He is the leader of the Fianna bands of young roving hunter-warriors, as well as being a seer and poet. He is said to have a magic thumb that bestows him with great wisdom. He is often depicted hunting with his hounds Bran and Sceólang, and fighting with his spear and sword. Fionn MacCumhail was transformed into the character "Fingal" in James Macpherson's poem cycle Ossian (1760), which Macpherson claimed was translated out of discovered Ossianic poetry written in the Scottish Gaelic language. Fionn MacCumhail features heavily in modern Irish literature. Most notably he makes several appearances in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake...
