About the Artist: Hilaire Hiler was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, where he developed an early interest in art. He studied at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design as a child, before pursuing further education at several renowned institutions, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Paris. Hiler lived in Paris from 1919 to 1934, supporting himself as a jazz musician while continuing his artistic endeavors. After relocating to San Francisco in 1934, Hiler became involved with the Works Progress Administration (WPA), where he painted murals in the Aquatic Park Bath House, now the National Maritime Museum. In the 1940s, he founded Fremont College in Los Angeles, later moving it to Santa Fe, where it became known as Hiler College. Hilaire Hiler's works continue to captivate collectors and art enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of modernist style and American history.
