Earl Linderman
“Showgirl”

1980

About the Item

Here for your consideration is a well executed mixed media painting composed of India ink and watercolor wash of a beautiful showgirl Signed lower left and dated 1980. Condition is excellent. Recently professionally re matted and housed in it original brass thin gallery frame. Overall framed measurements are 23 by 20 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida collector. As a child, growing up in the '30s and '40s, Earl Linderman was fascinated by the comic strips and Saturday matinees. He would spend countless hours drawing these characters, forming the foundation of his future as an artist of extraordinary imagination and execution. By the time he was in high school, Linderman was creating his own art, featuring heroes involved in adventurous dramas. Things have not changed much for the man who, since the early '70s, has been exciting art aficionados with his series, The True and Incredible Adventures of Doktor Thrill. "For me, the imaginative world of my art is a slam-bang, dynamite adventure. Just as Matisse did not wish to become a 'prisoner of reality' in his art, I, too, have taken the raw stuff of life and invented a panorama of electric personalities... My art is my autobiography, both fantasized and real. I paint 'romantic adventurism,' a mystique of the intellect and the heart." — Earl Linderman

“The Gesturing Man”
By Benjamin Stahl
Located in Southampton, NY
Original watercolor on archival paper of a gesturing old man by the well known American artist Benjamin Stahl. Condition is very good. Two spots of foxing or staining to the left of the figure. Very slight wrinkling of paper. Otherwise, no other issues. Circa 1970. Gallery wide linen matted and framed with a thin silver leaf frame. Overall framed measurements are 19.5 by 20 inches. Provenance: A Nokomis, Florida collector. Ben Stahl Biography Born in Chicago in 1910, Ben Stahl was introduced to the world of art by his grandmother. She took him on visits to the Chicago Art Institute and other galleries beginning when he was six years old and continuing until he was fifteen. After these adventures she would buy him oilcloth, brushes, and paints, and he would create “masterpieces” on the front porch of the family home. Stahl also read voraciously, which did not translate into academic excellence. However, when he was in seventh grade, he received a scholarship to attend Saturday morning lectures at the Chicago Art Institute. He would spend his Saturday afternoons drawing live animals at the Lincoln Park Zoo and the stuffed variety at the Field Museum, honing his knowledge of animal anatomy. After high school, Stahl got a job as an apprentice at a commercial art studio. One of the partners, realizing Stahl was ambitious and talented, encouraged him to draw and paint to create a portfolio. It was the contents of this portfolio that landed him a job at Chicago’s most prestigious art studio. During his time there and at other studios, plus a stint as a journalist for the Chicago Daily News, Stahl continued to develop a unique style, influenced by the Impressionists, which he felt would carry the mood and the emotional impact of commercial illustrations. Ironically, Stahl’s first assignment for The Saturday Evening Post was to illustrate a sea story – this for an artist who had never seen either the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans! The editors liked his work, and there followed four years of marine-themed assignments. Eventually Stahl asked for a change, so his next assignment was set in the desert – which he had also never seen. He was being noticed, however, and eventually he decided to move to New York and become a freelance illustrator. He illustrated over 750 stories for the Post along with a number of other magazines, and he continued to explore new approaches in his easel painting. In 1951, Stahl was commissioned to paint "The 14 Stations of the Cross...

Fall to Grace
By Robert Kraiza
Located in Philadelphia, PA
"Fall to Grace" is an original ink and watercolor painting on paper mounted to wood by artist Robert Kraiza measuring 19in height x 9in width. Artist Statement // In my work I invoke a whimsical world inspired by Victorian and Edwardian eras. To me they represent a romantic time period that has roots that extend directly into the modern world, both good and bad. The customs and aesthetics of the period are both fascinating and breathtaking but a vast portion of the population was victim to subjugation. It has since been eradicated on paper but still permeates to this day. I am exploring an imagined supernatural world hidden just out of sight where these woman could escape. This is an evolution from my earlier work set in the same time period with a continuous thread of humans and their animal companions. Through witchcraft these women find strength in their abilities and each other to leave the oppressive world they inhabit behind and escape to the woods to their Covendom, the boundary that defines the territory of their coven. They shed their customs, their corsets, and their concerns at the edge of the forest and gather among the trees to explore their magical potential with their familiars at the side. This body of work is exploring multiple media with a consistent theme and setting; combining watercolor painting, pen and ink illustrations, and graphite drawings. All pieces are created in monochrome on hot press watercolor paper mounted on wood with a gold painted border reminiscent of daguerreotype frames. Watercolor allows me to achieve results ranging from soft ethereal layered washes similar to oil glazes to precise minute details I include in all of my works. Bio // ROBERT KRAIZA (pronounced: cry-zuh) is an illustrator and fine artist who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied Media Arts and Animation at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Interested in many media, he often paints in monochrome watercolor on a small scale, inspired by the Victorian era and whimsical dreams in both his art and personal aesthetic. Depicting fantasy worlds from the hidden life of nineteenth century witches to miniature children...
