A student at the Académie moderne run by Amédée Ozenfant and Fernand Léger, Jacques Germain decided, on the latter's advice and that of Blaise Cendrars, to join the Bauhaus in 1931, where he followed the teachings of Vassily Kandinsky. In this very particular context of the rise of Nazism, he immersed himself in a stimulating intellectual universe, where he took part in the birth of avant-garde theories and plastic experiments. Taken prisoner during the war, he returned home after three years' captivity and devoted himself to painting.
One of the leading figures of French lyrical abstraction, Jacques Germain was initially interested in figuration. He soon felt the need to express himself directly through gesture, without the need to represent reality, and switched to non-figuration. He works with color, the structuring element of his works, using knives. Through a tangle of parallel lines, he produces harmonious, shimmering, balanced canvases that play on the effects of superimposition and transparency of matter.
He was represented by leading galleries including Galerie Maeght, Galerie Kriegel and Galerie Pierre Loeb.
In addition to his pictorial creations, Jacques Germain has also devoted himself daily to drawing, which he sees as a space of freedom where, unlike painting, mistakes are possible. The one presented here illustrates this black-and-white production. Germain's drawings are not preparatory in nature; he considers them to be finished, autonomous works. In a spontaneous, partly random gesture, he interweaves lines to create an abstract form in tension.

Jacques Germain
Jacques Germain was a pupil of the Modern Academy, directed by Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant, when Blaise Cendrars and Fernand Léger, in 1931, advised his parents to send him to the Bauhaus. He arrived in Dessau in October 1931, the only French student to study at the Bauhaus as a pupil of Kandinsky. Then, he goes to Frankfurt, where he follows the courses of the constructivist painter Willi Baumeister. With the arrival of the Nazis in power, he returned to Paris and worked in advertising design. In September 1936, Germain completed his military service, the war broke out a few years later, the artist was taken prisoner and remained in captivity for three years. When he returned to France, he devoted himself mainly to painting. In 1949, he made his first solo show in Paris.

Organizing the composition is a moon motif. This series was created by Antonio Puri during an artist's residency in Australia. Can be displayed in any orientation. Antonio Puri was born in Chandigarh, Punjab, India and raised in the Himalayas around Buddhist monks before studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Coe College, and the University of Iowa. He established his studio in Philadelphia where he practiced for many years before relocating to Bogotá, Colombia. During this time, Puri completed several artist residencies all over the world, including in New York, Hungary, Bulgaria, Colombia, South Africa, Serbia, Mauritius, India, Denmark, Trinidad and Tobago, and Romania. Puri’s range of geographical and cultural experiences are embedded in his work, where he commonly explores the relationships between his eastern and western cultural connections.
