Batak Medicine Bone

About the Item

This carved cow bone with lizard motif was made by the Batak people from the highlands of North Sumatra in Indonesia. The ornately decorated bone is hollow and used to store medicinal herbs. A figurative carved wooden head is used for a stopper. The lizard or "boraspatini tano" is a luck and fertility symbol and is a very popular decorative motif of this region.
