About the Item
Many chests of this type have exact repeating designs. To make the design different species of wood would be stacked and the pattern cut together as a pack. The result would be a number of complete versions of the design.
All of the of panels on this chest are unique. Some of the elements, like flower heads, are repeated but used in a different way. This was more labor intensive, for the leaves stems and ebony ground had to be cut separately.
The side panels incorporate a vase into the design. The top central panel is a wonderful display of stylized flowers including tulips, lilies, and some type of narcissus. There are also three birds and a stylized insect.
This chest has first phase case construction details dating it between 1680 and 1690.
