Impressions et multiples de John Gould
Britannique, 1804-1881
John Gould était un ornithologue et un peintre d'oiseaux anglais. Il a publié plusieurs monographies sur les oiseaux, illustrées par des planches qu'il a réalisées avec l'aide de sa femme, Elizabeth Gould, et de plusieurs autres artistes, dont Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf et William Matthew Hart. Gould est considéré comme le père de l'étude des oiseaux en Australie, et la Gould League en Australie porte son nom. Son identification des oiseaux aujourd'hui surnommés "pinsons de Darwin" a joué un rôle dans l'élaboration de la théorie de l'évolution par sélection naturelle de Darwin. Les travaux de Gould sont cités dans le livre de Charles Darwin, L'origine des espèces.
