Studio Ashby
Artful Pairings with Panache

“Art is a central part of our process at Studio Ashby,” says the firm’s founder and principal, London-based designer Sophie Ashby. “For this project in Holland Park, we drew the gentle palette of silvery blues, warm grays and rosy pinks from the client’s own collection of paintings by the L.A.-born, Paris-based artist Mattea Perrotta.” (A corner of one is visible above the fireplace.) The resulting interior, according to the designer, “seamlessly combines historical charm with contemporary freshness,” thanks to its pairing of vintage and contemporary pieces. Masterful matches include the sitting room’s Gio Ponti D.153.1 armchair set against a massive bespoke coffee table of recycled blue glass and, visible beyond, the study’s 1960s Italian rosewood desk communing with a Beak swivel chair from Sister by Studio Ashby and a chocolate-hued Candy Cube resin side table by Sabine Marcelis. These contrasting silhouettes, along with the conscious fusion of textures and materials, make this interior feel especially new.
