A Light Touch with Mid-Century Masters

For the British-born Lucien Rees Roberts, a 2008 inductee into the Interior Design Hall of Fame, nothing succeeds like functionality, simplicity and honesty. Here, in an Amagansett family’s living room, Rees Roberts’s custom wraparound sofa provides ample seating with a lean profile that looks “incredibly buoyant,” he says, and sets the stage for a world of mid-century design. The 1940s Jean Prouvé coffee table, Brancusi travertine side table and Brazilian modernist Jorge Zalszupin lounge chairs with leather strap arms are among the many iconic designs that Rees Roberts often sources on 1stDibs. “The mid-century vintage furniture offers a weight and grounding balance,” says the New York–based designer, “and the touches of the wood, leather and travertine create depth.” An Isamu Noguchi Akari floor lamp and Moroccan rug by Doris Leslie Blau add a cloud-like softness to the space. The cosmopolitan mix, Rees Roberts notes, has “a lightness, along with a subtle layering that entices and welcomes relaxation and intimate conversation.”
